Charter School Chain Application Hearing TONIGHT (5/31)

A charter school chain has applied through New York State to replicate one of its schools in District 13. This chain intends to seek space for 650 students in a District 13 school if its charter is approved, but the state will approve the charter well before the DOE decides where it wants to co-locate the new school.

There is a hearing tonight at 6:00 pm at PS67 in Fort Greene where you can learn more about the application and where the public can provide comments. See the link below for more information about the hearing.

This chain is also seeking to open two schools in neighboring District 17. The application specifically states that it hopes to locate in the areas of District 17 that border Prospect Heights. That means that the DOE could potentially be looking to find space for three branches of the same charter school in and around the neighborhood. (This is in addition to the charter school that will be opening in PS 22 in the fall, and all the pre-existing charters in D13 and adjacent districts.)

The charter's application states that it plans to make these "integrated" schools by targeting recruitment efforts toward the higher proportion of non-minority (specifically, non-black and non-Hispanic) children in Prospect Heights and north/west Crown Heights, and by eliminating most preferences for at-risk students.

Whatever your views, this is your first, best chance to let the state and the DOE know our thoughts about these proposals.
