Long-distance moving company recs — Brooklynian

Long-distance moving company recs

My husband and I are moving from Prospect Heights (sob!) to Atlanta. Does anyone have any recommendations for long-distance moving companies?

Any advice on the move would be welcome as well-- I feel like I"m being really unrealistic with what I thought it would cost and how long it'll take.

Thanks in advance!

Prepare for a living hell. Get everything is writing. Have your attorney review it. Get a solid quote on the price, not a floating quote ("Could cost as little as $5500 or as much as $11000") Make the company commit on a definite delivery date. Not a range of dates, but a definite delivery date with built-in discounts for late deliveries rated by the day (like 10 percent a day). If you use a local company in New York, check them with the City. If you use a national company, make them use one of their trucks, dedicated to your move and no contract haulers.

United/Allied et al will say that they are moving your stuff but actually it is a couple of guys they contract who may or may not show up with your stuff on time. We had a driver take our stuff to Mississippi to go to a family reunion before he brought it to Brooklyn. He was 6 days late and then took 4 days to get all the stuff off the truck. The moving cost was close to 10 grand.

My advice to you is to use a relocation service, not a moving company. The difference is cost and service. Expect to pay 20% more but your stuff will arrive. There is an outfit out of Dallas called Reliance that supposedly rocks steady. White glove service and all that.

If you end up doing it yourself (the move) pop around to 50 Plaza and talk to the doorman. He has a crew of guys that will put your stuff on the truck at a reasonable rate and most quick too without any expectations beyond cash money and lunch thrown in.

Good luck on your move to Atlanta. I lived there for a while. Welcome to the car culture.

    Wow. Excellent advice.
  • I found movingscam.com to be a great resource. The tell you how to go about researching moving companies. This article was a great resource to me as it taught me how to do a safersys.org check on the movers: http://www.movingscam.com/news/findmover.shtml

they also have a good message forum.

I just moved here and used All Star Moving and Storage and they were great. I don't know if they do long distance moves, but you can check.

    Their info:

All star moving and storage inc
    88 Sanford street
    brooklyn, ny 11205
    718-643-4705
    www.allstarnewyork.com

Apparently, there's another all star here in Brooklyn that has a bad reputation, so make sure you research the one with the above address if you choose to check them out.

    Good luck.
  • I will VOUCH for Allstar. I only moved a few blocks but they still did an incredible, amazing job. They were very professional.. but, if I remember correctly, they were on the expensive side!

    Good luck w/the move! 8)
  • Thanks, everyone, for your advice-- especially Metulj! I am not looking forward to the hassle... even moving my stuff from 3rd St. in Park Slope to our current apartment in Prospect Heights was a huge ordeal; I can't even imagine how much worse it'll be to move our stuff 1000 miles!

I'm also glad to know about the crew the doorman on Plaza St. knows, just in case we end up U-Hauling it.
