Brooklyn Back When - Open Thread

To those of you trying to figure out what old goats do with their time: Tuesday I took part in a "Celebration of Life" for a fellow who passed away Easter night or the next morning. He was 94. Today I did Line Dancing for an hour. At our parties here at our independent living community I dance almost every dance. A little slower on the Lindies but okay on the Rhumba and Fox Trots. We have a fellow here who dances almost as much as me and we will help him celebrate his 100th Birthday in 2 weeks. Last week we were on a bus trip to Tampa Downs. That is the local horse track. in another week or so we will be up at the Hard Rock Casino run by the Seminole Indians. So you can see it is not all the recliner and a book although I do that too. I read a lot of Patterson, Woods and Higgins. Right now I am reading NY PD Red III. Already read 1 & 2. I get the books right here in our own library. Retirement aint half bad!

Hi Patsy, I found NYPD Red lll to be much better then 1 or 2. I think that whoever his co-author is, has a lot to do with the storyline. I have now read in excess of 20 of his books. My favorites are the Alex Cross stories. Yesterday I served my monthly evening on the Security Patrol as a dispatcher. At least between that and my work with the Nondenominational Worship Service I feel I am giving a little back to this fine community. Sun City Center is used as a prime example of volunteering. Our volunteer Emergency Squad is second to none. We have volunteer drivers taking people to hospitals etc;, volunteers in the Libraries and so on.

Hi everyone -been so busy the last couple of months-been trying to catch up with all the news. My daughter and 6 year old grandson Justin came to visit over the Easter holidays & my btother's family came to Fla. the same time so we had about 10 family members here. We went to the beaches, the waterpark, sat by the pool all day and took the kids to Naples Zoo. Last week I took a motor coach trip for 4 days with the DelWebb community to Amelia Island, St.Augustine and a cruise on the St.John's River. Been playing Bingo & Bunko and potluck dinners-can't wait to see the May schedule! Warren you're right-no recliners for me either!! Hi to Patsy,, Judy & Terry too! Welcome Artiie Longo-u probably don't remember me. I lived on 8thAve. Bet.19th & 20th St. Maiden name-Reilly. Good night everyone! Talk to u soon!!

I remember a family and I think they lived on your block. Was it a small block between the highway and cemetery? The family was the Malibands. Let's see, there were 3 sisters, Laura, Susan and I can't remember the third girl.

Hi Jim-that's exactly where I lived. That family sounds very familiar. I think they lived a few houses away from me. I left there in 1974 when I got married. After living in the Chicago area I retired & moved to Ave Maria Florida last July.

I thought that block sounded familiar. I remember the three girls names now. Lauren, Susan and Allyson. I returned from the Navy in 1969 and dated Susan from your block a year later. They had cousins who lived around 22nd street between 4th and 5th with a last name of Joy. I only remember two of the girls there (Linda and Elizabeth). I moved to Bay Ridge in 75 and then to Westchester in 84 then to Pawleys Island, South Carolina in 07. Love it here as I'm sure you love the warm weather in Florida. We still have a daughter in college and a son in the Marines. So nice to talk to someone from the old neighborhood. I'm sure we have a few mutual friends from back then. I visited Brooklyn a few years ago. Boy, has it changed! Some good memories and experiences growing up in the streets. I retired 4 months ago from teaching. Am now doing a major landscaping job on our property. Just can't sit still I guess. Hope all is well with you and family and hope we can talk again. Jim Kavanagh

It's a warm sunny Sunday in Park Slope back in the late 40's, early 50's. Already been to Sunday School. My Mother hands me a paper bag with sandwiches and I start walking. Through Prospect Park, out onto Eastern Parkway and continue on to Ebbets Field. Theres the "Duke", # 4 in center field. Roy Campenella #39 behind the plate, Gil Hodges #14 at first base, Jackie Robindo #42 playing 2nd, Pee Wee Reese playing short stop & Billy Herman playing third. Carl Furillo is in right field and Gene Hermansky or Andy Pafko in left. Don Newcombe is on the mound pitching. What a way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Admission to the bleachers was .40 and then Ricky raised it to .50. It was still worth every penny. After the Game (or games if it was a double-header) I reversed my route and walked home! Everything was great until that monster Walter O'Malley moved my beloved Bums to La La Land! The Dodgers had finally beaten the Yankees in the World Series and then that excuse for a human being O'Malley moves them. I have NEVER rooted for the L.A. Dodgers and will not do so.

In other parts of the USA, people used the name Benedict Arnold as an epithet back in the old days. While we did that to some extent in God's Country, we preferred to use  the name  Walter O'Malley as an epithet ~  "you Walter O'Malley, you!"  was one of my favorite insults back in the day.

Speaking of prospect park, my daughter & some friends are playing a baseball game there today for men & women.
That's always fun!!

She's on the field as we speak.
Great news CSI softball team which my daughter plays for, won 1st place in the Playoffs.They had a victory party last night & now on Monday afternoon they will find out where they will be traveling to
on Wednesday to play another team for
The NCAA championship.
It's all very exciting! So proud!
Coming this far after beating so many teams is a coupe. & she loves the nursing program she's in.
I thank God everyday for my blessings.

Hi everyone. Weather is getting hotter-next 5 days in the 90s but I won't complain. Been swimming and went to the casino this morning. Jim--although I lived on 8th avenue I stayed on 19th Street bet.4th & 5th ave-don't know if you're familiar with anyone from there. Happy Mother's Day Terri, Judy and Patsy!!!!! Talk to u soon!!

To Patsy, Judy, Anna and all you Mothers out there, a very happy MOTHERS DAY to you all. My Mother died very young (51) in 1954 but I remember her and her wonderful ways. She always put her family first and her needs were put on the back burner till all the needs of her family were met. I was the youngest child so I had her wonderful care for the shortest time but I remember so much about her. I also remember her urging us to keep our faith in the Lord and tend to his teachings. She was in Church every Sunday setting a fine example for us. My Father worked shift work for B'klyn Union Gas Co. and could not attend very often. When we were kids, we used to wear pink carnations on Mothers day if your Mother was still alive. If she was dead you wore a white carnation. (Most of the Carnations were made of tissue paper and were sold on the corner on 5th Avenue). I wonder if that custom ia still carried on?

Anna, It's funny how people can grow up just a few blocks from one another and not know about the others friends or school. I don't know much about 19th street people at all. Like I've said, I only knew the Joy girls from 20th. I was a product of 13th street between 4th and 5th and lived across the street from Holy Family church. Jim

Hey Jim, Never mind a few blocks. I grew up on 12th Street between 5th & 6th Aves, went to PS 124's right next to Holy Family and still can only come up with names on 11th, 12th & 13th Street. I think I am considerably older than you so our paths probably would not have crossed but I think the fact of how many people lived on each block has a lot to do with us only knowing people from our own block for the most part. Many of my friends went to Holy Family in fact I used to walk home with them after school.
