Surveyors on Sterling Place

A couple of surveyors were photographing the Linden trees outside my building on Sterling near Flatbush this morning. They said they were studying whether the trees would be affected if the sidewalk was extended. I hope there's no harm done to them because they're about 20 years old, super-shady, and really healthy right now.

Has anyone else seen all the surveyors along Flatbush and Plaza St, down to Bergen lately, or talked to them? What's in the works?

i haven't seen the surveyors. but i can think of two possibilities - the first would be that they are working on north flatbush BID improvements. the second is that the DOT is still considering whether to make PH a Neighborhood Slow Zone, and is surveying whether it could be easily done. check out phndc.org for more info on the neighborhood's application to have a Slow Zone installed.

as for the trees, DOT's recent best practices seem to include very good tree protections. but once you find out what is going on, you should make sure you let the city know you are watching out for the trees! often times, that's all it takes to get contractors to be a little more careful and a little more respectful.

I spoke to a surveyor on Flatbush and Prospect 2 months ago. He said DOT will be making curb extensions (the elephant ears or "neckdowns") to shorten the crosswalks. Not sure if that means DOT is implementing the other Slow Zone elements beyond speed bumps and curb extensions....anyone know?
