“Sounds of Africa” Sunday Family Workshops

Cumbe: Center for African and Diaspora Dance, Brooklyn's new home for African and diaspora dance and drumming, invites families to attend the “Sounds of Africa” Sunday Workshops from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at Cumbe’s new dance studio on Fulton Street, near the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Come dance and drum with other families this summer!

Sunday, July 22: DunDun Drum and Dance with M’Bemba Bangoura (Ages 13-18)

In West Africa, drumming and dancing go hand in hand. Experience this connection with the exhilarating steps and rhythms of the Guinean dundun dance, and learn key drum phrases to signal dancers to start, change moves, and end. Dundun drums will be available for rent for $5. Register by July 21 to reserve your drum!

Sunday, July 29: Eco-Percussion Construction and Jam with Kevin Nathaniel Hylton (Ages 5-12)

Make drums and rattles using reusable, easy-to-find materials. Bring your own empty containers (e.g., milk cartons, cereal boxes) and build and play your new instruments.

Price: $25 for up to 2 family members, $5 for each additional family member. Discounts on multiple workshops.

Also: Registration for Cumbe’s Fall After School Classes opens this Friday, July 20. An Early Bird Discount is offered to those who sign up at the Sunday Family Workshops or online until August 12 at cumbedance.com.
