77th Precinct-Civil Servants or Modern Day Bullies

I was involved in a motor vehicle accident. I contacted the police department and officers from the 77th precinct reported to the scene. I was directed to report later on in the week to obtain the accident report, which I did.

After reviewing the report on site, I noticed that the report was incomplete. I showed it to the officer at the front desk who agreed. She actually said the report was written horribly. She recommended that I return during the evening shift when the reporting offer was scheduled and request an amendment.

I contacted the precinct that evening, however the assigned officer was off site. PO Marsan took the call and I conveyed the information to him. He immediately became very sarcastic and flippant about how the report was written and clearly stated that 1. officers don’t have to amend reports 2. reports can be written,” as the offer sees fit.” 3. reports do not have a standard format and are written for the Department of Motor Vehicles not insurance companies.

PO Marsan continued by becoming argumentative questioning my knowledge of the NYPD handbook and curtly stated, “we are policed officers, we write reports however we want.”

While I understand that the police department is inundated with serious crimes, it is also imperative that civilians contacting the police department for other matters not feel intimidated by an officer’s authoritative stance on an issue beyond their purview. Any and all reports should be complete and concise observations, nothing more nothing less.

I have to say.. I wasn't surprised at this officer's attitude. Walking in the precinct it looked like a welfare office. It was dusty with a slight odor. The front desk person was eating breakfast, speaking loudly about the person who had just called on the phone. Three men accompanied by another officer were escorted through the gate. A black woman approached them from the middle desk area asking, " who are you?" It was clear that they were there on official business.

I get it..there are no jobs out here so unemployed college dropouts become police officers. I just wish all of them didn't work in the 77th precict.

The only thing that would be surprising to me is if you had expected or received a different experience.

You are absolutely right!! The nerve of me to think that a police officer would be a professional. Overpaid Security Guards with pensions. I'm in the wrong line of work

Call internal affairs register a complaint.

Not a matter for internal affairs. Internal Affairs investigates allegations of corruption. Reports are written and sent to DMV, insurance companies are irrelevant.

BTW...He didn't really like your "I'm going to tell you how to do your job attitude" when you were telling himwhat the proper procedures were.

@ParadeRest Town Sheriff.I appreciate your question. I have quite a few friends in law enforcement so I am aware of the insecurities of police officers. Uneducated, lacking marketable skills, etc. So I thread lightly when engaging them. I was very kind and diplomatic. The fact of the matter is, I wanted to finalyze things so I can move forward with the insurance company. I was super careful not to make the officer feel uncomfortable. But it is something about a smart thorough woman that makes officers uneasy.

I respect your feedback. I understand why offers are often frustrated before they even pick up the phone. I also understand why they get terminated and have complaints filed against them. We have to try to be human first. He didn't know who he was speaking to.
