From LA to Brooklyn, with family, for IT dude

Hello Brooklynians,

I am living in LA now, but pretty tired of it. I used to live up north in SF for two years also, but while it's a city, it's certainly different "kind of city".. not really a big fan of it.

Thinking to move to Brooklyn. Couple things -- I have a family, 2 kids (new born + elementary school-age one ;-), wife. I work in IT (software engineering), but it's not in finances, neither in any other corp-stuff NYC is famous for.

So I am curious -- where would be a good place to rent in Brooklyn? 2bdr? Which would satisfy my love to the city, but have good schools, and not be hard on me (knowing I have kids). Also, how's job market for IT dudes?

Anything would help!

Thanks

  • How much can you spend per month on rent? Or, how much cash do you have on hand to purchase a home?

  • Why didn't you like SF? I'm curious what "different kind of city" means?

What you can afford/your price range will help us narrow down your choices. Brooklyn is HUGE!

I can tell you from experience that it costs more to live in manhattan/brooklyn then it does in LA or SF. (SF is close, but you get way more square footage for your buck there)

In Park Slope proper 2 bedrooms start around $2800+... (there maybe be deals out there, but you usually find those through word of mouth/friends etc...)
