Garfield Kitchen and Bath

Anyone ever use Garfield Kitchen and Bath at 266 fifth avenue? Their store looks really nice and they are friendly and helpful on the phone. They don't do installation but offer recommendations.

Any recommendations for kitchen, bath, floors etc welcomed.

  • We bought a bathroom from them and they were nice. We found the same vanity from a mail order place in Long Island and they met the price halfway. We came out ahead because we no longer had to pay to have it shipped from the factory.

They also gave us a deal on the faucets.

    Good luck!
  • I bought some cabinet handles from them. They were the only ones in Brooklyn that had the specific design. Nice ppeople. I'm suprised they don't do installations. Try Modern Kitchen and Bath Design in Bay Ridge @ 718 439 6666. They range from Russian mafia kitsch to decent solid wood cabs like hickory and cherry. And they install.
  • I had an acquaintance who used Garfield a few years ago and was extremely unhappy. I don't remember details. There have been many horror stories about them on the Park Slope Parents listserv. I would proceed with extreme caution. You might want to ask on the forum at brownstoner.com.

we ended up not using them because of all the bad things we heard. you should also check out the better business bureau (www.bbb.org). they also didn't get a great rating in citysearch (for what it's worth).
  • Whatever you may think of Park Slope Parents board, last year there were about 30-40 complaints about Garfield Kitchen and the stories were really nightmare renovation stories. I mean law suit kind of stories and if even three of those stories were true, I would NOT go in there. The guy sounded very crazy in every single story that was posted. There was not ONE positive story. At the least do some research.
  • Thanks everyone for the information and the suggestions. Glad I asked. I was looking into Expo Design Center and found out their going bankrupt. We hate Home Depot but was hoping this was a step up.

    Off to read those boards.
  • i heard garfield kitchen and bath changed their name... is this true? if they've been receiving bad reviews and changed their name b/c of it, they are WIMPS.
  • yea, I live around the corner, they totally changed their name (and a nice bright new awning) to Brooklyn Kitchen and Bath.

yea, stay away from Home Depot. Had them do my entire kitchen. I canNOT tell you what a disaster that was. sure, its a gorgeous working kitchen but no thanks to them. also, stay away from "MyHome" my friends used them and are having nightmares of their own. also they are ridiculously overpriced.

When you say HD did your entire kitchen do you mean that you bought your cabinets from them or your bought your cabinets from them and had them intall them?

I bought Thomasville cabinets from Home Depot and had someone else install them. All I did at Home Depot was sit with a salesperson who arranged my kitchen on the computer and then helped me pick out the right size cabinets. After that I had no dealings whatsoever with Home Depot I dealt directly with Thomasville who, I must say, has an excellent system for delivery of their merchandise. They give you an exact date and time for delivery plus a a merchandise number that you can track on their website. I cannot say enough great things about the Thomasville company.

    .

I had my kitchen completely gutted out. I designed the kitchen for the most part (the "designer" was a numbnut) basically I said "I want this here, that there, bla bla bla. find me cabinet sizes that'll allow that to happen. I flipped my kitchen entirely and added a pennisula.
Ordered (and had installed) Thomasville Chocolate Eden (I believe was the style/color, I could be wrong) Silestone counters, 5 appliances, lights, the whole shabang.

The design team was clueless unfortunately, however he was a very nice guy. The team that came out to measure, 3 times mind you, did it wrong, worst of all I believe was the installer. By the end of the job I said "forget it, I'll do it myself". and I did. and I still am! 1 year later.
I can send you before/after pics if you'd like.

I would love to see it. I did the same thing recently and am such a sucker for renovation porn :)

oh, I completey agree w/ you on Thomasville. Love my cabinets, love the tracking system, delivery, follow-up. the best choice I made was going with them. I love my cabinets. LOVE. Thomasville.
  • Walked by today and I see they are now Brooklyn Kitchen and Bath? Anyone know why? Bad press perhaps?
  • Read the posts above--that's certainly what everyone suspects.
  • It should be called WEASEL KITCHEN & BATH.
No matter the name it's the same people running the place.

Friends of mine had a nightmare experience with them.
Stay away if you don't want to be ripped off.
  • eggcream wrote: ...Expo Design Center
My only experience is with Home Expo when I was working for a company that managed coops and condos. One of the unit owners ordered from Home Expo and it was a nightmare. All thier instillation is subbed to different contractors and they could never get it ccoordinated. Start times came and went, they couldn't provided the cocrrect licenses and insurance for the subs and etc. This was a couple of years ago.

You might try one of the many cabinet stores over on McDonnald Ave. Friends had good luck doing that. If you want I do know a guy that does all custom work and his shop is over in the Navy Yard, not cheap but good work. The advantage to custom is if you have a small kitchen the cost isn't that much more but you can have all non standard sizes and take maximum advatage of the space.

Do you have a design already?
  • Subject: garfield kitchen and bath

I'm not sure about this, but I think that there is a new owner of the store---he bought it from the kind of kooky lady who seemed to be running it last time i was there. That would account for the change of name too.
  • We had a great experience with Garfield. They gave us a great price break when we found an item cheaper online. They even opened up their store so we could pick something up on a day they were closed.

In other words they were great!
  • Ikea for kitchens, all the way. THey're great.
  • [I was looking into Expo Design Center and found out their going bankrupt. We hate Home Depot but was hoping this was a step up]

This bit of news made my day. We went to Expo 5 years ago in the hope of getting a one-stop-shopping experience for a large, high-end-but-not-outrageous kitchen. It took them a year and a half to finish, and we were without a kitchen whatsoever for 3 months because they ripped up the old before they figured out their designer had mismeasured for the custom-made cabinets. And that was just the beginning. My blood pressure still goes up just seeing the name "Expo Design Center." BTW, there's a whole website dedicated to complaints against Home Depot and Expo. :D
