Average electricity bill in studio/1 bedroom?
Hi, guys,
I've lived on 19th Street btwn 7th and 8th for 4 years in a studio that was all inclusive and paid for my electric bill. Sadly, my landlord is selling the building and I must move. I'll be staying in the Park Slope/South Slope area in either a studio or 1 bedroom.
My question--to those of you who live in similar conditions (I'm also living alone) do you mind sharing your average electricity bill? I'd really like to know what I can expect since I have not paid one since I moved to Brooklyn from Florida.
Most of my electronics are Energy Savers tho I don't have energy efficient light bulbs. I'm an author, so I'm home all day working on my computer.
If anyone wouldn't mind sharing, I'd so appreciate it! ![]()
Thanks so much!

I usually pay between 85-150 a month. Meaning, in the winter (since I get good heat and don't have to have a space heater), I pay about 85 a month. Now in the summer, (when my heavily larded ass overheats), my bill runs up to 150 per month because I run an air conditioner as soon as I get home and throughout the night.
I live in a very large 1 bedroom.
Just to give you an idea of how much KW I probably use: I have my fridge, TV, DVD player, desktop, laptop, a humidifier for my harp, and my stereo system, roku box, several lamps, toaster oven, coffee maker, record player, and microwave all plugged in. They may not be turned on all at once, but there is something known as "energy vampirism" where even if a machine is turned off it is still using trace amounts of KW if it is still plugged in.
So you may be able to get a lower rate if you unplug all your stuff when not in use.Now in terms of air conditioners:
Now my air conditioner is in my bedroom. The rest of my house remains hot in the summer. I imagine, that with 2 air conditioners I would hit roughly 200-225 month.

My 750 sq foot apt is usually $40-50 in the winter and tops out around $130 in the summer. I leave the AC on powersave in the summer for my dog and in the winter I leave a light on for the dog while I am at work.
I used to live in a 400 sq foot studio in Manhattan and my electricity bills were about the same.

I'm not in Park Slope but I think ConEd rates are the same throughout the city, no?
I'm pretty vigilant about conserving energy, so I only pay about $50 a month when I'm not running window air conditioners. That's for a small (~400 sq ft) one bedroom with CFL bulbs in all fixtures and lamps, really basic fridge and stove, and everything else plugged into power strips that are switched off most of the time. I work from home too, so my computer, monitor, modem, and router are on all day; either this setup or the iMac in the living room serves as my entertainment center too, so I don't have a separate stereo or TV sucking up juice. I do turn off the computer and monitor before bed though. Now that I think about it, the only things that stay on 24/7 are my alarm clock and the modem/router.
I just signed up with a green ESCO and they promised that my bill would stay roughly the same--we'll see. Anyone else using Green Mountain Energy as a supplier?
