FARRELL'S OF LOURDES
There's something magical going on at Farrell's - bordering on the miracles occurring in Lourdes, France.
To those who are not familiar with Farrell's, it's a Brooklyn Bar whose notoriety is second only to the world renowned Harry's of Venice, which was made famous by Hemingway.
Farrell's own Pete Hamill, a Brooklyn writer, has over the years heralded the golden elixir in their famous styrofoam containers.
Hamill was celebrated as a child prodigy when he made the amazing discovery that the water from the bathroom faucets were colder than those in the kitchen .
It became a proud moment for his family when he was awarded a full scholarship to the prestigious Regis High School due to this discovery.
But, as fate would have it, his moment was destroyed when his Uncle Liam flew in from Belfast to celebrate Pete's good fortune. Upon arriving at the Hamill residence, Liam went to the bathroom to get drink of cold water and was killed when the toilet seat hit him in the back of his head.
Pete, is also famous for introducing Shirley MacLaine to Farrell's - which at the time, refused to serve women at the bar; this didn't sit well with MacLaine, who went into a tirade and cursed out the bartender in the many languages she has acquired in her previous incarnations.
Both Pete and Shirley left and were disappointed that she was not the one to break the Styrofoam Ceiling that Farrell's held for so long.
Ok, back to the story, these are a few photos I had taken showing crutches and wheel chairs discarded outside Farrell's
-
And a client who came out, still on crutches, walked one block, and threw them down when he was miraculously cured.

Yesterday, I captured the ex-Pope Benedict, who was flown in for the annual 'Blessing of The Kegs', which is performed before every St. Patrick's day parade in Windsor Terrace.
If you pass there this Saturday or Sunday, you'll see long lines of the faithful waiting outside the bar for the annual blessing of the containers.
I recommend you get there early to avoid the clutter of crutches, wheelchairs and seeing-eye dogs that will be cast aside at the exit door.

(if you haven't seen Elmer Gantry, you should, it's a classic!)
-
Gantry was a great movie, another of my favorites was The Ten Commandments, which, while viewing it in a movie house the couple sitting in front of me broke four of them .

Due to the hostile response to his appearance at the Rockaway St. Paddys Day Parade , our beloved Mayor has decided to declare himself a Honorary Mick for the day at this Sundays Park Slope Parade.
All drinks will be on him,but bring your own 32 ounce containers.
Howdy, Stranger!
