Safe neighborhood? Zip: 11206 - Pulaski and Throop- Bed-Stuy

I am moving out to Brooklyn for the first time with 2 other young women, all of us are 23 years old. We found a beautiful renovated apartment in this area at $725 each. Is this a safe place to live? Thanks!

  • I'm a male a few years older than you and I personally would not want to live there. It might look like a decent area on a map because it's sort of close to Williamsburg, but you're right by several very large housing projects to the north and a huge homeless shelter not far to the south. The rest of that neighborhood isn't the best regarding safety and amenities, either. Plus your main transit option is the G, which tends to suck. Other people may have different opinions, but the farther south and west you are the better re: Bed-Stuy, in my opinion.

I live south of there near Throop and Fulton, and the area isn't the greatest, but better than where you're at and the rents are comparable. The AC is convenient to Manhattan and there are easy buses to Williamsburg and Greenpoint. I'd suggest trying to find someplace off Fulton and west of Throop (even though there are some nice-by-the-neighborhood's standards places on Lewis, which is east of there).

  • There are better places and there are worse. Pulaski gets more rough a couple blocks down near the YMCA. Try walking around the place in the evening to see how it is. I got hit on for cash twice and offered drugs once the first time I did that in my area and I was a couple blocks from you. Just use your head. The G(host) train does suck, completely and totally.
