Gunshots outside 95 South — Brooklynian

Gunshots outside 95 South

8 gunshots at 3:06AM today, followed by lots of hysterical screaming. Cops on scene in 2 minutes.

6:30AM: Franklin Av. between St. John's and Lincoln remains roped off with crime scene tape. Cops say they hope to open it up again in an hour or so.

A ton of people were outside 95 South for an hour or so before--plenty of shouting and loud voices leading up to the gunshots. An argument, maybe?

  • heard it was over a girl

  • Franklin Avenue was still closed at 10:30 AM. I wonder what will happen when 95 South has its liquor license renewal presentation before the Community Board. I remember last time about 2 years ago, there was considerable discussion.

  • Word has it that an individual was shot, and was alive when taken to the hospital.

...if he doesn't die, there probably won't be much news coverage.

pretty sure no other bar on Franklin has had this problem, at least in the past few years. and if i recall correctly, this has happened before at 95 South.

  • nothing good seems to come from the crowds at 95 south.a history of brawls and shootings

  • Despite it looking like the victim will live, this shooting received some traditional news coverage after all.

I suspect the incident was covered because it was one of many shootings in Brooklyn last night (and thus easy to write a summary article), but also because the Daily News was able to access some photos.

I've cut and pasted the parts related to this incident:

Daily News wrote: A 25-year-old man lies wounded on Franklin Ave. near Lincoln Pl., Crown Heights, just after 3:00 a.m. on Sat., April 27, 2013, where a shooting occurred outside the 95 South Bar & Lounge. The victim was hit several times in the body, and one bullet struck an outdoor refrigerator of a nearby green market. He was unconscious when taken to Kings County Hospital.

The unidentified victim, who was hit in the butt and thigh, was taken to Kings County Hospital and expected to live.

Police were still trying to identify the gunman.

  • Let me guess: witnesses are not cooperating.

  • eek, stray bullet hit Nam's fridge?

  • I lived across the street and moved only because of is place. Loud music you could hear across the street with windows shut, louder crowds on the streets yelling all night long... Had a gun pulled out once as I walked past to threaten me to say hello as I walked past (weirdest gun threat ever...guns don't make friends...). Went for a drink once - overpriced, rude service, and the decor felt so incomplete. I truly hope for all who live in the area that their license is not renewed

Amazing how nobody sees anything in such instances.

That place has always given off a bad vibe when we've walked past it.

  • My husband & I have lived across the street from 95 South since 2009. Over the years, we've been woken countless times in the wee hours by arguments, screaming, cursing, beer bottles breaking and (on a few occasions) gunshots. Friday and Saturday nights are the worst. Noise and violence always escalate in the warmer months when people loiter outside the bar all night, shouting.

Any time we've called the cops, we haven't even had to give them the address. We say "95 South" and they know exactly what establishment we're talking about. Often times, they've already received a few complaints before ours.

  • Yes, the bar has had a troubled history, and (as Capt Planet points out), it did not get CB8's recommendation without much discussion the last time it was up for renewal with SLA.

Then, about 7 months ago, new owners were announced for 95-S, and this thread was created: http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/topic/95-south-gets-revamped

As always, people had less complaints over the winter. Now that the warm weather has arrived, this incident will hopefully not be be the first of several that will happen this summer.

If the goal is to subject their alc lic to disciplinary action, those concerned should focus especially on the bar's behavior, so the owners can not successfully claim they are doing all that is reasonable to run their establishment and that is an incident in which they had no part of.

Hopefully the 77th Pct is fully investigating Friday night's incident, and will file this form (used by law enforcement) with the SLA if it believes that their involvement is warranted: http://www.sla.ny.gov/system/files/PDR-nyc.pdf

Neighbors and other concerned people can file this form, to start a SLA review process: http://www.trans.abc.state.ny.us/JSP/complaintreg/ComplaintRegistryPage.jsp

Yes, hopefully the police have more to go on than this:

  • Wow, I always got a sketchy feeling walking by. But just wow!

  • I was in attendance that particular night and won't take anything away from establishment. I have gone on a wednesday night and had a really great time, Nice music, older crowd and descent vibes. Don't quite understand why there were so many altercations this night which led up to the shooting, but it was indeed scary. Definitely a change from what Franklin Ave. used to be however, still have alot of work to be done. Sad that people in minority communities cannot gather without it ending in violence. #Saddened

  • You know it just occurred to me this happened just after the weather got warmer. Hopefully, this isn't a sign of the summer ahead.

  • We are not going to be able to adequately explain why violence occurs on message board.

But I will state that bars around the country try to screen out those they believe to be most likely to engage in violence. They often use a combination of the below:

-Some set age limits about those required by law: I.E. 25.

-Some implement dress codes: no hoodies, jeans must be worn above the butt, no tshirts

-Some aggressively pat customers down for weapons, both to check for weapons and to demonstrate authority over their patrons.

-Some don't sell pitchers of beer, and set their drink prices really high.

-Some aggressively refuse entry and/or kick out people who become intoxicated.

-Some set rules re: gender. The doorman is told not to admit any more single men for the night, because the ratio between men and women in the club has gotten too high.

Of course, all of these "hassles" inconvenience the large % of the customer base that is at almost no risk of being violent, but the belief is that they are worth it. ...that taking these measures will result in financial and political payoffs which are greater than not taking them; A good "environment".

In the case of 95-S, the owners seemed to have reached the opposite conclusion. The operators of 95-S seem to believe that they either could not make the transition from "what they are" into something else, OR have decided that they have no need to change.

Meanwhile, Sugarcane on Flatbush Avenue absolutely thrives.

  • I'm informed that 95 South's license is up for renewal in I October of this year.

Let's all keep this incident in mind in October and be sure we have a thorough vetting at the Community Board. I believe the committee that reviews liquor licenses meets on the first Monday of the month at CenterLight Healthcare on Classon between Park Place and Prospect Place.

It seems the guidelines cited by WN31 should be presented to 95S as something worth considering.

  • Capt-

We could just use this thread to document incidents throughout the summer, that way we will remember them come October.

Let's call this incident "The shooting on April 27th".

...perhaps we will get more creative in naming the incidents and complaints as the summer goes on.

  • Interestingly, I just ran into the owner of the building across the street from 95S. Her building has lots of video cameras and the videos of the night in question have already been subpoenaed by the cops. She's about to open her own restaurant in the building and is not at all happy. I'm sure she could be encouraged to testify at the liquor license renewal. Or not, maybe, given the realities.

  • This block also has one or more NYPD cameras mounted on telephone poles, which went up when folks were battling the drug dealers that used to deal out of the store at Lincoln and Franklin (now the site of Glady's restaurant).

If they still function (many such cameras don't), I wonder if they have any good, quality images that the police are using in their investigation.

  • BTW, just in case readers wonder if nightclubs and bars are ever closed down for failing to exercise due care, I give you the following:

  • August 21, 2013:

Those who oppose and support this bar can soon have their say at CB8.

Yup, their liquor lic is up for renewal [it expires 10/31/2013], and they have to appear before CB8 as part of the renewal process.

The application is likely to be the subject of some contention as a result of incidents that have happened in and around this bar since the lic was issued, 11/1/2011.

The bar owners are scheduled to appear on Monday, September 9, 2013 at 6:30 PM, at CNR-Center Light Health Care Center.

It is located at 727 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn, NY (between Park and Prospect Place).

  • for those of us who cant make it in time from the office to the meeting, do you know if there's a way to have our voice heard? eg by email or web or something?

  • there are a variety of ways to contact CB8:

    http://www.brooklyncb8.org/contactus.php

With the hope that they will forward your letter to SLA, I would make sure to state the lic number of 95-S.

That info can be found above.

  • thank you much! will be writing, hope others do too (constructively, not emotionally of course)

  • I'm getting seriously sick of this shit. I do feel bad for Nam's fridge, though.

  • I do feel bad for Nam's fridge, though.

Dunno, $7 for a half pound of asparagus leads me to believe that the fridge got exactly what it deserved.

  • Yuppie_scum has a point.

I don't think anyone is going to be successful in arguing that expensive asparagus is causing a public nuisance to the degree that the authorities become involved; We may have to secretly root for random acts of karma.

Returning the topic, the Yelp reviews capture the range of feelings that come up re: 95-S. Please makes sure to read all 16.

I expect the full gamut of similar opinions to be expressed at the CB8 mtg.

    ah, Brooklyn.
