Moving to Gates and Grand — Brooklynian

Moving to Gates and Grand

Hi. My husband and I are moving to Clinton Hill (Gates and Grand) and love our apt and the bldg. We have not been there at night and I wonder about me walking home/going out alone late. Can anyone give any input to a street savvy, yet skinny white girl?!

Thanks so much.

  • Its mostly fine, but has had its moments. Gates and Grand is where the police barricade is, blocking Grand towards Fulton to slow the drug sales at the corner of Fulton/Grand.
The new cafe, Choice, at Grand and Lafayette is good. Go outside of the area for groceries. or do Fresh Direct.
Taking the subway, C at Clinton/Washington at night is just like anywhere else. Be aware of your surroundings.
  • There is also a new cafe on grand and fulton (south side) called brown betty, that is lovely. and the always wonderful outpost.
the area is definitely still 'transitional.' we walk our dog all around the area, but not too late at night, and have met lots of really nice people. you may just want to figure out which train station (c to clinton-washington or franklin, or g to clinton-washington) is going to give you the walk you prefer. closer to fulton is a little rougher than the g end of things. if you are out late you may just prefer to cab it home. its a really great neighborhood despite some of the rougher aspects.
