This class is for anyone wanting to write a script for film or TV . You don't need any prior experience-- just a desire to tell a story in pictures. On completing the 5 weeks, participants will have the tools to complete a draft of their script.

Week 1 and 2: Sense Writing and the Visual World of Character

Film can be one of the most integrated art forms: setting, action and character are united in an on-screen experience. Yet many screenwriting classes start with the "pitch" -- which can often stifle your initial creative impulses and lead to problems later on in the writing process. In these first two classes, we'll explore the visual world of your main character-- where they live-- and from there find the organic structures of plot and story.

Week 3: The Synthesis

After we explore your characters and their world, story ideas will start to form. Participants will be encouraged to come up with several one-sentence "pitches" that capture the essence of your ideas. From your strongest single-sentence pitch, we'll develop a structure for your screenplay. A clear beginning, middle and end will become apparent and you'll begin to articulate a three-act plot structure in a 1-2 page synopsis.

Week 4-5: Scene Structure & Dialogue

Beginning at the beginning, you'll write the first 5-10 pages of your work.

By the end of week 5, you will come out of the workshop able to fully inhabit the world of your character and understand the links between this visual world, the internal dynamics of desire, and plot. All the tools to complete a first draft that lives.

Participants of all skills levels are encouraged to apply — the only prerequisite is a desire to write.
