drunk guy problem
there's a drunk guy on my corner who constantly harasses me and passes out in extreme conditions (101 degree weather, snow, rain). last night i walked by and he was passed out once again, but this time face down surrounded by his own vomit. not sure what to do in these circumstances. neighbors are great and friendly, and seem like they care for this guy when they can, but what do you do in that situation? i dont want to call the cops.

It seems to me that outside of some verbal abuse he's harmless. At least from your description. So best advice, when you see him passed out watch where you step.

If the guy is passed out (especially in his own vomit) calling the cops is the best thing you can do for him. I think I know the guy and the corner you are talking about (unless there are two habitually drunk guys passing out on the street in the neighborhood)and having someone come to check on him, make sure that he's not actually in physical distress, and potentially cart him off for medical attention if necessary is a mitzvah.
On a separate note, I was downtown one day on Court Street and a guy was passed out in front of McDonalds. There was an ambulance parked at the next corner. When I knocked on the window to let them know, the EMT responded "Yeah, that's Lucky. We've been out to check him three times today. He's drunk, not sick". I walked away but a woman stood and berated them until they got out of the bus and went to check on him again. Cops and EMS won't like it, but they will do it.

homeowner, im talking about the man on prospect and nostrand- a pretty bucolic block once you get past the corner. i generally think he's harmless but some of his behavior has set off alarms for me. once, when i didnt respond to him, he screamed bloody murder for literally 5 minutes straight- i could hear him inside my place a few houses down.
for the record, i grew up in new york and have dealt with these situations my whole life, but never where i genuinely worried for myself and the other person constantly.

Yep, that's the guy I was thinking about. I think that he's relatively harmless, even in his angry drunken stages, but I can understand why he's freak you out when he goes off. If he makes you feel unsafe, generally, go with your gut and avoid him whenever possible.
I don't know the ins and outs of the mental health system (where is Whynot when you need him???) but unless and until he does something of a criminal nature, I don't think there is anything anyone can do other than make sure he isn't lying dead on the street.

Gee, i thought you might be talking about the old guy with gray braids and a cane that usually pisses himself weekly on Nostrand and St. marks. But I know the guy you are talking about.

Nah, that guy is a drinker, but Prospect Guy is a committed drunk. I saw him stumble and fall face first into a mailbox a couple of weeks ago and knock himself out.

Well I guess it is a way to get somebody else to clean you up, give you a clean bed and get some air conditioning in the hot weather while you "enjoy" yourself.

I see the guy on prospect all the time. He has never bothered me in the least. But he is always there.
When ever you see someone who has fallen down on the ground and is unresponsive especially if they appear drunk call 911. Never feel bad about calling 911 for someone who is passed out you never know what is actually going on with them. Or at least that's what a FDNY fire fighter told me when I called 911 and apologized when the guy woke up when the fire truck arrived. This is kinda of gross but if you see him vomiting roll him on to his side. Otherwise he might very well choke to death on his own stomach contents.

i am also a visibly queer woman and he goes back and forth between sirring me (and then screaming) or saying super sexualized things. my (femme presenting) partner hasn't really had much of an issue with him though. hes also not always a jerk to me. in either case, i'll most likely continue to cross the street/alert neighbors who have a rapport with him of his state when necessary.

Markhor, the other week he got a bit threatening to a small elderly asian woman, making a gun shape with his hand pointing it at her and moving closer to her and then back. She was frightened, so i walked by her to cross the street, and kept eye contact with him, and he backed off mumbling.
Don't let this offend you or come off sexist, but maybe if you feel threatened at any point, just ask some big guy 'hey, walk with me past that guy'.
