The landlord still has missing bricks in the facade. I suspect DOB expedited the Certificate of Occupancy. Those missing bricks might make for a breezy winter.

Having visited other shelters for families, it is really weird to see one with stainless steel appliances and modern elevators.

Looks like an unfinished dump from the outside. Missing bricks, wires hanging all over the place and empty dirt plots waiting for passing garbage to collect in them.

I suspect the inside has similar issues. The city secured a building that was not intended for this population, before the contractor was finished. "Good enough"

Outside lights are finally installed, and final bricking is done. There was a worker out last week caulking all the windows. Sadly, no landscaping has been done. Overall, folks are very quiet. There are also full-time guards at the parking lot entrance. I think the back entrance to Medgar Evars next door could use it too.

I still can't believe that rather than the city chose to put a homeless shelter in a brand new building like this, rather than working out a deal with the landlord to increase the % of affordable units in this building (heavily subsidized by the city, of course) or persuade the landlord to accept Section 8 for a time period. The affordable units are in very affordable AMI bands for the community, and the rents are reasonable, and its a damn shame that only 30-ish families living in the shelter will have the chance to apply for and win an affordable lease in the building they are living in.

I walked by here on Sunday. If I hadn't seen this thread, I never would have realized there was anything controversial about this building.

As a result of the work I do, I can spot shelters and supportive housing when many do not. The only real give aways for this building are the women with children out front or nearby. They are visibly low income (the women smoke, their strollers are of the economy variety, and their kids are often eating snack food). One would not get such a concentration of families in the area without such a building. ...I am not bothered by them, but do see them.

@whynot_31 I know you are trained to spot these things, but the lay person is not. So, I don’t get it when people are outraged about the possible chaos that a homeless shelter would bring here in the neighborhood.

People do fear change, and tend to exaggerate it's impact. This belief is part of why I am not as in favor of "community control" as many of the local activist types.
