Loud booming sounds north of Sterling Place around 9 pm?

About five minutes ago, I heard a series of loud booms in the distance. It sounded kind of like fireworks, or thunder -- or explosions far off. I saw someone across the backyard looking out their window at the back of a facing apartment who seemed to be looking to see what was going on, as well Does anyone know what this was? It went on for some minutes.

  • Fireworks for sure. Barkeley Center maybe..

  • I would've seen them from Barclay Center -- it's about eight blocks away with nothing very tall in between. Fireworks seems the most likely explanation, except why would anyone set off fireworks when it's 20 degrees out? Anyway.

  • Well, lookey here! Bet this was it:

Fireworks on Ellis Island, which explains the echo effect -- it sounded like it was coming from both east and west. There's a Blue Angels flyover tomorrow (the 13th)
