Before photos anyone?
This now makes 9(!) big new developments in crown heights. We'll be discussing them all here: http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/topic/the-big-6-developments-in-western-ch-in-2013#post-775084

But where will I get my Zipcars?!?
-
We are actually up to 16 big developments in western Crown Heights http://www.brooklynian.com/discussion/44634/links-to-the-big-16-developments-in-western-crown-heights/p1
Here's what the garage looked like before they painted it white:
Here's what the entrance looks like, once it became white:

The google streetview feature gives readers an idea of the size of this site (It's huge!)

Karl Fischer? Not again. How that architect continues to work is beyond me.
-
Karl Fishers' firm is a big one.
...it has shown that it can consistently create building designs which keep costs low, and attract renters and buyers whom are willing and able to pay top dollar.
Buildings are not created based on what people living in the neighborhood want, or what they think "looks good"; Buildings are created on the basis of what is believed to bring investors and other stakeholders the greatest ROI.
His firm delivers.
-
Boo! No more ridiculously convenient Zipcars!
-
Ugggh. I have a monthly spot in this garage, which is super convenient to my apartment on Sterling between Washington and Classon. The price is reasonable as well, and the guys that work there are classic characters (especially Floyd). Any sense of when they will begin demolition? Are there other garages in the neighborhood?
-
rendering linked by nothinlike

As of Dec 19th, the DOB has not yet issued a demolition permit.
-
That's ENORMOUS.
-
Yes, and it will likely cause the residents of Lincoln Place to be upset because it will obstruct light and views that they presently have.
Meanwhile, the owners of Franklin Park and The Classon are likely psych'd.
-
I expect it will even obstruct some of my light here on Sterling. But it's worth it.
-
Eastbloc, why is it worth it?
-
It will bring at least 172 new earners into the neighborhood to spend money on commodities and spur more retail development. And it will substantially improve what is a pretty shitty block.
-
If the city's economy stays on its present track, I suspect the residents of this new building will be pretty typical of the area in terms of income.
The surrounding buildings and amenities are already being upgraded.
...I don't foresee this future building as being an "Island of Wealth"
-
Nor do I, but there's no one living there now.
172 new families are a good thing for the nabe.
-
For the heck of it, lets ignore all of the jobs created by the actual construction and the impact of the residents spending.
That said, I expect the completed new building will employ more people that the present garage.
I think it is reasonable to expect this building to be ready for occupancy in the Spring of 2016.
-
Work on this site has yet to begin. The garage continues to be open.
I suspect most residents of the block are not aware of the plans.
Needless to say, it is only one of several large, local developments in the works. -
The rendering is actually pretty damn attractive...I think it looks nice!
-
Just received a letter from Park Right corporate HQ that the garage at 564 St. John's will close on April 1st. They are offering monthly spot-holders parking at 235 Gold Street by the Manhattan Bridge, which doesn't do me much good. Are there ANY monthly garages within relative walking distance of this one? I know there are a handful of outdoor-only lots in the neighborhood.
-
Hey there -- there is a good garage on Sterling Place between Nostrand and Rogers Ave. The guy who runs it is really nice and willing to give good deals on monthly parking.
-
The garage is now empty and closed for business.

-
No Demolition Permit has been issued yet.tick, tick, tick

A new entity now has controlling interest:
" Developer Heritage Equity Partners has bought out a controlling stake in a new Crown Heights development. The deal values the property at nearly $30 million."

Yes, it was quite under capitalized as a parking garage... -
Neighborhood kids are leaving goodbye notes on the garage: http://www.bkreader.com/2014/05/off-the-wall-young-voices-of-crown-heights-say-goodbye-to-a-beautiful-eyesore/
-
I'd love to get those kids' opinions on the effects of the big projects I track. I now track 16 in western Crown Heights, this garage is just one of them:They might be too young to understand the reasons and consequences of the changes, but maybe not...
-
Saw the garage door open today and some kind of work being done inside.
-
"For years, Tierney’s gallery has served as a welcoming place for kids to meet up after school to receive homework assistance or simply a listening ear."I LOVE Five Myles for being this to neighborhood kids.

Today, I noticed that workers have begun to demolish the roof. Several large (10' x 20' ?) holes are now visible. They might be backing dumpsters into the garage, filling them and then hauling them away.I doubt the roofing materials have any value, but am told that bricks (like those that make up the exterior walls) are worth some $.Still no demo permit on the NYC BIS link: http://a810-bisweb.nyc.gov/bisweb/PropertyProfileOverviewServlet?boro=3&block=01178&lot=0026&go3=+GO+&requestid=0564 St. Johns566 Saint Johns568 St. John's570 St Johns
