Brooklyn-based charities for year-end donations?
I got an email from Parachute: "The Coney Island Performance Festival" looking for year-end donations. This event is part of the Brooklyn Arts Council and so tax-deductible. This past year, the group moved in a new direction and started a poetry library for low income, at-risk teenage girls in a hurricane affected Coney Island high school. Any other deserving charities to consider?

I'm not familiar with the charity you referred to but the Brooklyn Public Library offers wonderful services and free classes and is a worthy charity. It's necessary to be really careful in deciding who to give to as so many people have created charities as a way for them to make money themselves by running it. Often little or no funds go to help others and there are duplicate services provided by existing charities so that it isn't necessary to fund "overhead" for a new charity.
