Exactly. Besides, its not like people are any more responsible out there. Plenty of dangerous dogs abound. As I've said dozens of times--its bad owners, not dogs in general. GUNS are inherently dangerous, WIZZING SOFTBALLS are inherently dangerous--dogs and humans are not inherently dangerous.
The suburbs are hell.
I hate that stupid owning a dog is like owning a loaded gun analogy. -

Well, almost anything is more dangerous when combined with a dumbass. Cars, guns, dogs, whatever. I know you can't properly "shoot" a dog at somebody (that old Far Side cartoon notwithstanding), but some people do fail to socialize their animals properly, or worse, train them to be aggressive. If you don't approach strange dogs with caution, you should...guess I'm just saying inherent qualities aside, dogs can be dangerous enough in practice. -

I kind of agree about keeping dogs leashed in public, but the way you keep posting the same link is getting annoying.

Subject: Cute Approach
Somebody on this board is really cute. Pretending to be "ParkAdvocate" and annoying the crap out of everyone by posting the same thing over and over!? Trying to get me bounced?
Do you think that I'd actually spell my own blog incorrectly?
You're showing your true colors. -

Well, that's true...I do approach strange humans with caution. -

Ben: No need to apologize to the "Advocate." He's a lackey/proxy boy for the Juniper Park Civic Association, which sends him their press releases and private emails for dissemination on his blog (if one can call it that, since there's no way to post or even to communicate with the author).
The JPCA want to make it seem like the Advocate is some sort of "voice of the people." -
Just an update, the final ruling was made on off leash rules last week and the judge ruled in favor of the dogs.

not quite final, though it seems we're near the end of this battle. today, the Dept of Health is voting on the issue. also, the Parks Dept needs to ratify their regulations as well. i'm simplifying my message here just cuz i'm in a rush, but the point is that the judge's ruling was a WONDERFUL thing... but the law has not changed yet. he just ruled that the Parks Commish has the right to make the rules for NYC's parks. -
and may the Juniper Park Civic Association rot in the NIMBY hell they wish for us all.
Seriously a horrible organization that not only is against dogs but was effective in quashing a cross-harbor tunnel that could have helped ease our cities reliance on truck transport to the detriment of all of us. -

Yes, thanks for the clarification. I poked around a bit more after posting and saw that some work is still to be done but this ruling is definitely a great thing. -
Drano wrote: I don't have a stake in this - I don't currently own a dog but they don't bother me - but I'd like to suggest that "If you don't like it, move" has probably never added anything to any debate or discussion, and I've seen it brought up in quite a few.
By thunder, I wish I had written this.
Bottom line is that there isn't anything wrong with using legal means to change things right where you are, and there isn't anything wrong with people using legal means to try to stop you. The "right" side ain't always gonna win, but that's the way it goes - if you don't like it, move.
Sorry, couldn't resist.
...Disclaimer (one in a series): I have two dogs and, since moving here last winter, am losing sympathy for the doggist (antidog) point of view. Is the menace of unleashed dogs in Prospect Park really any greater than that of the occasional free-ranging teenagers, screeching children, beligerrent drunks or the random impromptu sporting event? :?
And statistics about dog bites are usually B.S. anyway. Considering unlicensed pets, varying breed populations and who's providing the numbers, I don't think you can reasonably say one breed is dramatically more dangerous than another. Dogs are more like people than doggists would like to admit.
And. Dog control is about more than a stupid leash law. I once got a ticket from a guy in a Parks Department SUV because I took my dog off her leash so I could adjust her collar and tags. She never was out of arm's reach (she was just sitting there), but it took me several minutes to straighten her collar out. $100 fine, but whatever. ...I'll do my part, use my leash and clean up; and the rest of you can at least simmer your rage down to a roiling boil.
