    KNIT AT MAHA'S CAFE
Knit anew in January. Lurking behind Tummy Yucko, Maha's a cozy, warm and friendly place right off the Bergen 2/3 stop near the 78th Precinct. Getting there is easier than getting arrested!

Xueling is working on a really cool skirt for her daughter. I'm making a sweater for Maha. And Doug, what are you doing?

I am at a complete standstill - I don't understand the arm and neck shaping and wtf she's talking about "keeping 3 stitches). I'm not a novice knitter but that sh-t is written all confusing-like. I'm so frustrated with this sweater right now and ready to quit....

Nice cardigan pattern. Knitty.com has a lot of great projects, with exception of the men's thong (in WOOL??).

No problem, bring your sweater in along with the pattern and some scrap yarn. I'l be at Maha's by around 7:15-ish (try the falafel). You should be decreasing along the neckline at a steady rate maintaining a three stitch border. Bal bal bla. The instructions are pretty good, but you should take notes for counting stitches and rows.
  • erikka, I hope you continue with the sweater-- what a pretty style. I haven't made anything from knitty yet. I started the "womb" but the dp needles were driving me crazy. Now that I've knit a couple things on dpn's I may give it another go.

I can't make it to Maha's but hoping to be at the next Prospect Perk knit night.
  • Xueling, we'll miss you. Good luck with the skirt. You got a good start.
  • Crap, I have a guest in town and won't be able to make this one. Sorry folks, hopefully next time. In the meantime I'll be hammering away at that damn cable pattern.

Ahhh, entertaining pesky guests, the bain of all hobbies! Well, the weathers not too bad, hope you folks have a fun time. Maybe I'll see you at perk next week Wednesday. Post some pics of your work in progress. We'd all love to see your sweater in the making.

We're knitting at Propect Perk this Wednesday if you stil need help figuring out the collar, but it looks like your'e on the right track. I'm helping someone with a fiarisle steaked project. Mostly it's stopping her from crying when she cuts into the knit.

  • Subject: P and S is REALLY closing

Well, I was down on Broadway at a meeting so I stopped into P and S afterwards. I have good news and bad news. First the bad, P and S is actually closing very soon, they have no plans to relocate. Good news, all items are priced to go, up to 30% off on fabrics, yarns, and machine. So get yourself down there, its worth a trip just to look. They are closed on Sundays.

  • Thanks pitu! This sounds really cool, I'm going.
  • Ahh the knitting. Well, in Feb, I'm not doing any circles at Perk or Maha's, , been bogged down with work. But keep on knitting, I encourage you to all to make something nice for your loved one(s) this month and please use this topic to post questions and events. Cheers!
  • Subject: Knit in March

Again with the knitting. Hope you all made some fun stuff. I made Maha a sweater in stone, walnut, olive and chocolate. I Googled traditional Palestinian patterns and after the first two pages of "burkas" I found some nice stars and flowers and stuff. Anyhow, she liked her sweater, especially the thumb holes in the sleeves.

I'm working on a better version of the "Bill Cosby" sweater.

    This ever happen to you?
    1) You make a sweater and run out of yarn.
    2) A year later when you pick it up again they don't sell "that" yarn anymore so you switch.
    3) Now you're almost done, but now you've out grown it.
    4) But you finish it anyway. Someone's bound to fit in it.

Anyhow, what have you folks been working on?

  • I'll come to Perk tomorrow! I'm almost done with my first sweater and may need an expert eye around to make sure I don't mess up the sleeves which are knit with 2 circular needles (gulp...never done that before). This is the sweater I'm knitting:
    http://www.zephyrstyle.com/catalog/item.cfm/2367447/3974522#image_1

I've run into the situation above, but it's more because I am a slow knitter and my kids seem to grow too quickly. Good thing I have a new niece to pass these things along to.

I bought my own ball winder and swift so I won't need to borrow yours. It's provided hours of entertainment for my 3 yr old on these cold winter days.
  • Nice sweater Xueling, glad to help you along with it. The winder and swift are good investments and hours of winding entertainment for your kid (or cat). Cheers.

Hey shahzadmasih, Questions? Just send me a PM or post your question.

You know what this knitting post needs? More dog sweaters. Come on people, show us your dog sweaters!

    that's MY question . . .
    shah, are you a spammer?

  • Subject: Art Show at Stitch Therapy

I still have to get my flabby ass over to that show, I hope its still going on.

Oh BTW, there's a great art show at Stitch Therapy, the work of Gail Rothschild. Her work investigates knitted plane topology. In other words she paints detailed studies of knitted fabric, really cool stuff and she's really nice too. Check out her site: www.gailrothschild.com.

  • I finally finished my sweater and after I blocked it it looked pretty good! But after a day of wearing it to the playground and picking up 2 kids all day long I felt like it was hanging off me! Boo! Maybe I should try to stick it on the next fat doggy I see walking by and then I'll post a pic. I *knew* I should have done the smaller size.

In the meantime my fingers are itching to start something new for myself.

  • Thanks apollonia666. Bummer, I thought this posting went international and beyond. I guess I should throw out the e-mail from West Africa that states "That Yarn Guy, I have decided to contact you on a project that will be very beneficial to both of us..."

Awwww xueling! Don't rip out or throw out the sweater, try this trick instead, it works.

    1) in hot tap water (5 gallons) dissolve 1 tbs. salt and a pack of unflavored jello, mix well
    2) without agitating, soak your sweater in solution and let it cool overnight
    2) next day rinse well and press out water in a towel
    3) dry flat

The trick is to lose some of the air bewteen fibers. You'll lose only about 4% in mass, but it should fit better. Rember not to agitate while in hot water, it will felt. Note: Does not work with Goya Instant Flan.
  • Cool, thanks, I'll try it!

COOLNESS! I just got this in the mail, my men's fedora made it into a book, Knit.101. Booya! This is like the Nobel prize of yarn! Well, sorta. Ok, not really. But Boooya!

I'm going to celebrate by putting on some pants and getting a coffee. There's a lot of cool stuff in here too, cool bags that you can put your dog in, socks, sweaters, a knitted clock and its filled with a lot of good pictoral how-to's.

This shameless self promotion was made possible by the friendly folks at Knit.1 Magazine and Lion Brand Yarn.
