  • I walked in and out of Bar Reis when it was in it's thug stage. It also looked like it must be the bar in the neighborhood that serves all the minors.

Commonwealth is a straight shot to my house, so I go there the most. Nice jukebox. Great Lakes has a nice jukebox, too, but I feel like my demographic (28-35) leaves around 10 and is replaced by the 23-27 crowd. Notthatthere'sanythingwrongwith that, it just makes me feel old.

You can only go to the Gate if you can sit outside. Sitting inside makes me feel twitchy, must be something in the setup.

By that same token, I'm very forgiving of the Park Slope Ale House because I like the 6th Ave. view and there's something comforting about the booths inside. The trashy food doesn't hurt, either.

    Loki = terrible.

Total is nice on weeknights and early weekend evenings, if you want wine and cheese and stuff and want to splash out a bit. Definitely can be fun for a weeknight date.

12th Street - Meat head shed. I live across the street, so I can hear the "wooo!" girls and the chucklehead guys who for some reason live far enough away from the bar to need a car service waiting for their rides home and yelling and etc. It's a shame such obnoxious people go there, because the space is nice and the burgers are good.

(And for the record, is there any "swinging singles scene" in PS? Any time I'm out, I'm afraid of approaching any decent looking fellas for fear their jealous girlfriends will kick my ass. I'm a lover, not a fighter.)
  • Haha, true. I would say there's enough love to go around but then my girlfriend would kick my ass.

    Thanks
just recently moved into park slope south aka greenwood heights aka south slope!!!...great neighborhood with a cool edgy vibe..try KitchenBar - great for all ages, cool music, cocktail menu, great food, and awesome vibe...prices are great too! oh yeah - live music as well...
  • I've been to the Kitchen Bar to eat, but never to hang at the bar, but I'll give it a try (more likely in the spring/summer when I'm more likely to walk home)

happy hour is one of the better ones around... 4-7pm $2 sangrias (my favorite), $3 beers, $4 wines...oh yeah - and it's everyday!

I'm glad you like it, but you're starting to sound like you either work there or have some other reason to promote it, which doesn't go down well on this board.

nope...just my favorite spot and have become friendly with the staff...it has become my second home basically and it's a cool spot...
  • Flexi ... what's your deal?

Are you the quasi police of this board? Was that a threat you levied on single in PS? Has the all the blood pooling in your brain as a result of that ridiculous pose you insit on keeping caused you to go mad?

Also, and don't take this the wrong way, but do you think anyone cares that you will be going to the Kitchen Bar during the spring and/or summer? A bit high and mighty are we? Ok, you can take it the wrong way.

Before you call me out as obnoxious or someon that "doesn't go down well on this board" please....oh go ahead, do your worst.[/b]
  • No, "Drunken Guest", it was not a threat but a suggestion as this new person has posted THREE times in a short span about how fabulous the Kitchen Bar happy hour is.

There's a classified section for advertisements, which this was beginning to sound like.

As for my avatar, I don't give a shit whether you like it or not.
  • Actually Flexi, PS single posted exactly ONCE about how great the happy our was.. the first post was a response to the singles scence, the second applauded the bar's happy hour, and the third was in defense of her second.

Now... as for you there is a section for those with too much blood in their heads and who have been obviously baited by a drunken guest.... it's under the "talk to the hand" section of this glorious board. Yeah.
  • No, also posted under "Help!" about how great KB is. That would make three (maybe you skipped the counting lesson in school).

Baiting? Eh, is that your best?
  • Flexi.. will you stand up straight when you talk to me? I can see your nuts through that spandex.

Oh please don't drag yourself down by responding... I'll catch up with you on another thread.
  • OK guys.... this is over, NOW. Please. Both a ya.

Can we get back to talking about bars now? I really like(d) the way this thread was going...
  • Subject: more room for some of us

I'm so glad all you guys don't like the Gate. More room for those of us who do. Excellent beer selection, low key bartenders and clientele, not too young, not too old, can bring the dog.

Bar 4 - blech! It smells, and is full of small, hyper 20-something children.

    Loki - awful

Commonwealth - my second fave PS bar. Laid back, easy place to hang out.

Barbes - nice but fills up really quickly. Last time I was there, a guy was blowing a tuba right in my face...

Steinhof - good bar later on in the evening, once the dinner crowd clears.

  • Absolutely not single girl, your input is always welcome here. And oh yeah, you're pretty cute..... yes, even when I'm sober.

hehe. Yes, lots of people gesticulating unnecessarily to get attention.
  • Living Room Lounge on 23rd b/w 5th & 6th isn't bad if you are in the South Slope. They are huge, so if you go with your friends you can get your own area. Their beers are cheap. They have board games, pool I think, and a stage for bands and karaoke.

There is also Smolen about a block away.

    South Slope!!

Small, dark, and crowded is how I like my bars. It may not be the best bar to everyone, but at least I've attempted to answer the op's question which was "what's your favorite bar in Park Slope and why?" You don't like the Great Lakes, hey, that's fine. Not everybody's going to like the same bar, after all. Your critique of the local bars is informative and witty enough, but how about answering the op's question instead of slamming others choices.

Went to Royale the first time last week (hey I've only been here 3 mo's). Austin Powers atmosphere and funky music. A little on the divey side which suits me. It was Mon. night. I'll be back to check it out on a weekend.

Also went to the new bar, Sheep Station, a few blocks north of Union on 4th ave. This place is a keeper, check it out. Very reasonably priced ales. Get yourself an Imperial Pint, mate!

I've stumbled into Lucky Thriteen twice. First time the barkeep was talking about this werewolf that drinks there. Second time was amatuer strip night/Big Lebowski movie night. Strange place. Where do these people come from?
  • Kind of a side note, but...

Can someone please explain to me the dichotomy of 201 on 5th? How is it possible to cater to two separate demographics in one single establishment? Every time I go in there I can't help but wonder if it is a social experiment.

Woo woo! I'm withya. Lit makes Great Lakes look like Hammerstein Ballroom.
  • Lit is the worst bar on the planet. Let's not discuss further.

200 Fifth? The place has been around a long time - It probably has a loyal following among people who have lived in the area for a long time, while still being a well-located, mellow, and non-divey place to drink for more recent arrivals - plus last I knew they didn't overcharge like some of the trendier joints.

Not *that* long - I've been in PS 12 years, and 200 Fifth came later.
The bar has a big following with cops and corrections guys, who drive there. Hope someone is designated to stay sober...
The restaurant part might be more local in the clientele.

haha. I hear you. Its not for everyone. My husband has been friends with one of the owners (Max) for like 10 years, so we are biased.

Not that much later...I was going there at least ten years ago (and believe me, I wasn't at the grand opening), and that is a long time for an avenue that has seen a lot of changes. They were among the first of the "nice" (or whatever term you wish to apply) places down there.

    The rest, however, was speculation.
