Brooklyn Lager is a horrible beer, never understood the popularity. And word up on Buttermilk's taps. If anyone knows of someplace that A) cleans their taps and keeps it super cold then I will buy you a beer in thanks.

Can you imagine how many $1 cans of beer you'd have to sell to turn profit, and how ugly things would get after people drinking that much $1 beer? Some other bar in the LES was selling tall boys of PBR for $7 and people were buying them like hotcakes. Obvs not a lot of math majors down there.

My new favorite Brooklyn beer: Sixpoint. Sweet Action is such a dangerously easy drink. Please start bottling.

When we were going to Sepia a lot it was always clean and cold. I haven't been in about 4 months though...

Also, the taps at Brooklyn Fish Camp are great. And there is a bar up front if you just want to have a drink.

I gotta agree with the first part of that statement - I must have missed the "ghetto" phase because I've never gotten that vibe from the joint.

In Park Slope, I think ghetto means they saw a black or brown individual who was neither an aspiring novelist nor a graphic designer.

About two months ago my buddy and I left Great Lakes and were on our way to the 'Milk when he suggested we stop by Bar Reis. As we approached Bar Reis--and I was in the middle of complaining about the thuggish, ghetto nature of the joint--a bunch of K-Fed wannabes were in the middle of a brawl that spilled outside. So unless that "ghetto phase" concluded in the last few weeks, I stand by my assesment of that place.

I'm a whitey myself, from the Dirty South, and I gotta tell you, this is one of the most segregated-feeling places I've ever been.

And btw, I love this neighborhood to death--been here 10 years--but you are SO on the money: the PS is VERY segregated. It's also funny to watch the reaction of some people when a person of color--black or brown--walks into a bar like Great Lakes, for instance. Kind of a "is this person gonna start a fight or get out of line with my friends/girl, etc?" (And if you wear FUBU and order a Corona, forget it.) Even the bartenders do it. It's the Slope's dirty little secret. But most of the guys and gals behind the bar--and in front, I might add--in this neighborhood are above that sort of thing. I hope, anyway.

I remember one of the very first times I walked into a certain 5th Ave bar on a packed Sat night and the bartender--having gotten to know me previously and witnessing the reaction my appearance got--made it a point of greeting me by name as I walked in. And he did it quite a few times, as a matter of fact. Very cool.

Agreed. And their support of Mr. Ratner's Neighborhood just sunk them even further in my book. (Yes, you too, Jay-Z.) Kudos to Freddy's for doing what every PS bar should've done with their Brooklyn beer: introduced it to the curb.

Thank you, you're the sweetest. And I'm not surprised about Mr. S getting certain looks. I got nothin' but love for the guy so I might be heavily biased in saying that he IS one of the nicest dudes around. And I have quorum on that.

I rarely get any funny looks these days, but then again I've been in the 'hood for 10 years--which is a lot longer than most--and have either met, dated, or hung out with a bunch of our neighbors, so chances are if I say, pop into Lakes for a drink, Bonnie's for a burger, or Southpaw for a show there will be someone of my acquaintance there. (I feel like the damn mayor of PS sometimes!) And that is definitely a factor.

Still better than Billyburg any day. Ha!

well i'm 26 and moved to brooklyn for a more low-key atmosphere. As such, my favorite bars in the neighborhood are more north - 'bar' (part of 'farm') on flatbush and bergen is great, dark wood, low-light, GREAT beer and desert, Then there's Union Hall of course and my new favorite - Cherry Tree on 4th - the pizza is INCREDIBLE and the backyard is totally cool with little seating alcoves, and a friendly crowd. Again, good beer.

Like I said, most( but not all ) Park Slopers would think you to be Ghetto simply by having a darker complexion than theirs.

The "writer/designer" bit was a snark on the stereotypical careers of this neighborhood.
