You forgot 'teh'. I would hope the admins are asleep or out gettin drunk. I would have been out, except that my favourite bar has changed itself in oh such insidious ways. So I went got myself a nice box 'o wine. It's official status is "in progress".
Here's a philosophy joke for you: -
admins don't mind hokey jokes. nor do the mods. just personal attacks. and f'in' morons.

honestly I would have hoped for more from fellow park slopers - to be a philosopher, a writer, an artist or designer - I'd think these are the kind of careers or passions that cater to such a diverse neighborhood as Park Slope - north to south. I wouldn't think park slopers to feel that certain peopel are ghetto simply based on their complexion - id' hope we'd unite in our collaborative 'fringeness' so to speak. The minds, the artisans, the creative and on the fringe individuals taht we are.
If your'e talking about the yuppies with baby carriages, that's a whole other sect of park slope. And while they may be more 'straight and narrow' they are also the ones who bring in the money to update the architecture, the nice shops and good restaurants that make this a desireable place to live. I come from Ithacan, NY and believe it to be one of the most diverse, multicultural, liberal and democratic societies I've ever seen in the states. Part of the reason I moved to Park Slope from Manhattan was to experience another such palce and woudl hate to think others saw it in a bad light because of a few bad apples. -
zbruno02,
I'm the guest talking nonsense up there with erskelyne. I thought I should mention that I have NEVER felt even a hint of racism in park slope (I've lived here 5 years). I'm Indian, by the way.
The ONLY time was the time that erskelyne hailed me in the street: "Hey macaca!", he said. I think he was joking, though. -
Ok well that's good to know. I was just confused about that comment above - joking around is totally another story haha.
-
I didn't say "Macaca", I said Macintosh. I thought you were the I.T. guy. My bad.
Seriously, Zbruno, The racism i've seen here is a much more insidious type. It's a fear that manifests itself as a condescending and patronizing attitude. It happens most among people who feel that they are open-minded and progressive.
At least with the epithet spewing bigots, you know where they stand. -
But what about the booze!!!!!!!!
My vote is for Hanks. Before 5pm when the regulars are there or really late when they fire up the BBQ and the live music starts.
By the way, does anyone have a favorite place to get a bloody mary?? It is Sunday morning after all. -
I thought Hanks was in Boerum Hill. We're talking about PS bars.
Cherry Tree is worth a visit for the beer selection-over 100 beers. The back patio is amazing, though closed for the season. It was a little frat-boyish when i was there last. People were actually doing beer bongs or whatever you call them (beer through a funnel).
On a side note, on Friday night a buddy and I headed up to Williamsburg for a change of pace. We stopped by about seven different bars-dive to Galapagos and everything in between. At 2am we took a cab back to PS and finished the night in a few bars here. Consensus: The Billyburg bar scene isn't all that. Yes, the B-burg bars were more crowded, but they seemed to lack the range of diveristy (I don't nec mean color) you find in the Slope. Let me get to the point here- it seems like all their bars (maybe w/ the exception of Sputyen Devil) have the same damn people in them. We have some dive bars that are actually uninhabited by hipsters. I mean, after all, sometimes you do want a break. I'm glad I moved to PS. We have better food, too. -
totally agree with comment about B-Burg bars (wiht the exception of Barcade haha). But yeah - i don't go there often - too many hipsters thinking they're sooooooooooo cool - fools. There is one bar out at the Morgan L stop (the only bar in the neighborhood). I couldn't tell you the name but it's tiny and cool inside, quiet and only locals but all very friendly. A small narrow outdoor section. I have had some of the most intellegent and artistic conversation at that bar that i've ever had in the city - very unpretentious and real. check it out.

I disagree. People may be "the same" but they are WAY better looking by leaps and bounds. I've never seen anyone wear sweatpants to a bar in B-Burg. Park Slope, people wear elastic waists just about anywhere. And if you're single you're much more likely to meet someone in Williamsburg than in PS--everyone's already shacked up with SO. It's slim pickings 'round here. Music in Williamsburg bars tends to be better and sometimes you can actually dance as well. Just by virtue of having Spuyten (my favorite bar OAT) B-burg has PS beat by miles. -

Sheesh. Just because I like sweatpants with an elastic waistband doesn't mean I can't look good when I hit the bars. Here's a shot of me before going out this weekend. I think it speaks for itself.

Sweet mullet! But I honestly think you're more likely to see that haircut in Williamsburg than PS (worn ironically, of course).

I believe the bar by the Morgan Av stop that you're referring to is Kings County. I used to go a lot last year when an old PS buddy was tending bar there. (He's since moved back to PS and is working in the 'hood so I never really make it out there anymore.) And, I agree with everything you had to say about it. Kings County is in Bushwick, although the realtors would prefer you called it "East Williamsburg." Clowns...
I also concur with the assessment of the Billyburg scene. Unless a friend is performing or DJing I make it a point not to visit Hipster Hell. Just the difficulty of getting there and back is enough to dissuade me. It's easier to get to Manhattan, for Pete's sake!
And while the ladies may or may not be hotter out in Billyburg--or Manhattan, for that matter-- they sure are flakier. I'll take the numerous PS hotties over the pretentious LES and LES wannabes any day. -

I love Buttermilk ... but it reminds me of the dark, dank dive that I used to frequent at home ... some girl said it there one night, and I totally agree .. it's the perfect place for the exiles from small towns all over America to congregate and drink ... -

See, that's the problem I've always had with it. It's not a bad place, and while I've had my share of liquor there, it usually feels like it's the "hippest" college bar in some Midwestern town.
Seriously. Was there some sort of coup in Des Moines or Cleveland i didn't hear about? -

Again, I think that there must be a totally different crowd there when I go!
Its the one place that I meet people who actually grew up in New York. haha. Are you guys sure that there aren't two alternate realities in that place?? -

Remember that kid in grade school who had a million board games and you'd start playing and get halfway through before you realized there was a bunch of shit missing--like there was only half a deck of cards or two cars and no thimble. That's Buttermilk for me. You can play connect four but you've gotta find three boxes to get enough checkers to play. -
I dunno but methinks there's gotta be a moratorium on board games, dogs, and children in bars. I have nothing against any of 'em, but they can all be pretty annoying. The latter two, however, can be dangerous.

Out of curiosity, we went to the "new" Royale last night. Not good. I'll just say that there were some hairy-chested guys with gold chains, and one guy wearing a t-shirt that said FedSex. And the bartender was flirting with him.
-
Eww!!!
I refuse to set foot in there. -

Thank you. I hope more people refuse to patronize that place.

Though i did hang out w/the former owner/manager last week and he said the new guy was already complaining about the low business. Many "I told you so's" were said.
Oh, most of the new bartenders are former Hawaiian Tropic Zone girls. Dedicated professionals full of experience, I'm sure. -
Applebee's on Flatbush, near Fulton.
Surely, I jest. -
Has anyone actually been inside the Houlihan's in the Atlantic Terminal Mall?

I've spent way too much time in that bowling alley in my High School bowling team days. We didn't generally go to the bar at that time, although I have been to it since. -

the bookies there bought me lotsa drinks. me, waiting for some friends to show up, equaled a fantastic target for faux romance. fun, but I was wasted in about an hour. guh. -

I've given it a long look a couple of times after a Target trip with my daughter. I figure a drink for me and BBQ-honey mustard nachos for her, but so far we haven't taken the leap.
Howdy, Stranger!
