Glassblowing OPEN HOUSE December 9, 15, 16 2007
Edited to add: This year's open house is today, and next weekend! It's a wonderful, warm way to spend the afternoon. I've added details in a new post below.
------------------------------------------------
If you are interested in glassblowing, please come visit Scanlan Glass and see what it's all about! Kevin Scanlan will be holding an Open House December 2nd and 3rd from 11am - 6pm. Scanlan Glass is located on 14th Street near 3rd Avenue (entrance on 13th right behind the Getty gas station).
Glassblowing is challenging, physical, meditative, addictive, interesting, and a lot of fun. It teaches acceptance, teamwork, flexibility, and perseverance...
I blew glass in college, and here in NYC there are only a few places to blow freely. Kevin's studio is the most friendly, reasonable, and welcoming that I've found. Kevin offers classes, lessons, and studio rental. Or, just come and watch!
As a hobby it's not cheap to practice, but it is an ancient art and craft which is so rewarding that it's worth every penny (I go about every other week). PM me if you'd like more information. Or, come by the Open House the first weekend of December. It is cozy and warm in the studio, so come and visit. Maybe I'll see you there?!
(I don’t work for the studio, but Kevin is a really decent guy who runs a studio with welcoming integrity, so I thought I would mention it. http://www.scanlanglass.com/)

Subject: glassblowing open house this weekend
Yesterday morning I turned on the TV for background noise and they were talking about glassblowing, and I looked up and there was Kevin, on TV!
If you'd like to see one of the segments go the CW11's website... Here it is http://cw11.trb.com/news/local/morningnews/wpix-hoffhome,0,2442462.htmlstory?coll=wpix-morning-news-3 and click on the "glassblowing".
I'll probably stop by Sunday afternoon. Maybe I'll see you there. -
Very cool.

I missed this. Does open house happen every so often?

Scanlan Glass will be holding an open house today (Sunday December 9th), and then again next weekend (both Saturday the 15th and Sunday the 16th) from noon until 6pm. It's warm and cozy in the studio, so come - bring your lunch and hang out and watch the ancient art of glassblowing.
There will be glassblowing demos, refreshments, lots of beautiful handmade glass (bowls and vases, Christmas tree ornaments, etc.) for sale... Come and learn more about glassblowing (Scanlan Glass offers lessons and studio space) and stock up on holiday gifts, too!
Scanlan Glass is on 13th Street at 3rd Avenue - a few doors behind the Getty gas station.
(I dont' work at or for Scanlan Glass, but I do rent blow-time there and I think it's a great, welcoming, relaxed, wonderful place.)
Howdy, Stranger!
