  • You know this was a scam a few years ago? Several people actually lost their homes (I cannot for the life of me rememeber the complete circumstances) and had to sue to get them back. And they'd never attempt this in an area that they knew the people would be strapped to sue them.
I saw it on the news and I think it happened in Newark.

And it's a scam, just like a bait and switch.
You know that one...where the ad in the paper shows a large TV for a ridiculously low price, but underneath in miniscule printing it says it has a limited quantity. And probably the guys brother buys the one they're offering. But they've gotten you into the store and you may think, "Oh, what the heck, while I'm here I'll just buy the other one."
And BINGO.....they've accomplished what they set out to do.

My daughter was looking at a great apartment in Washington Heights before Brooklyn and ran into a rental agent that strung she and her roommates along for 3 months with..."Oh we're waiting to hear back from the condo board" and "I need more paperwork from you."
Wouldn't return their phone calls. etc. Finally, they'd had it and made a call to the broker of the agency. After all was said and done...are you ready for this one?
The place couldn't be rented out due to the boards rules of no subletting.
The agent said he didn't know....AND HE LIVES IN THE BUIDING!!!
He bragged the whole time about his "in" with the board, and held their deposit for 3 months and now they're fighting with the attorney for the condo who is avoiding returning the $250 application fee cause he says the broker should have known (which I'm positive he did) that the rental couldn't go through.
Shouldn't an attorney also know when he begins the process that the address warrents no sub leasing.
We're not done yet, now this is my mission and you don't want to piss me off with something as wrong as that.
ANYHOW, the reason I was coming on here was to give you the Attorney Generals phone 800-771-7755 and he's Andrew Cuomo.
I have it cause it was one of the numbers I found when getting my info ready to help the girls fight for their money back.
There are such unethical people out there and I don't ever know why it surprises me.
  • It is hilarious that 3 years after the fact, this thread is still the #1 hit on Google for Robert Rocheeld.

    I love I, Rearrangement Servant too :)
  • One more thing - real estate agents and brokers are licensed by the state. It wouldn't be hard to find the licensing agency and make a complaint. I'm sure they'd be interested.
  • its so few years ago :p. no longer care about it. lol i have no idea why this was bumped up.
  • Oh, yeah, see that now...
