Mosquitoes -- I'm still getting bit
Subject: Mosquitoes -- I'm still getting bit
Is anyone else around here still getting mosquitoes? Two nights ago I got mosquito bites on my arm while sleeping. And last week when it was warm they totally ate my face. No kidding, I looked like I'd been beaten, with mosq bits on eyelids, lower lip and cheeks. I know lots of people on this message board were complaining about them a month or so ago. Am I the only one still getting bit?Comments

I had them buzzing around for AGES but never knew why. Closed all my windows and virtually coccooned myself in plastic wrap to not have them eat me alive in the middle of the night. My glorious roommate later discovered that there was a bunch of standing water outside our window with little mosquito babies numbering in the gajillions swimming around. We dumped it and they went away. You may have to do some detective work and see if there isn't some rainwater collecting somewhere.

We swatted two this week!!!

Roger that. And it'll probably get a lot weirder than that over the next few decades. -

I think we're on pretty high ground and will likely be safe.
Now Gowanus could be another story. I'd bet Red Hook, Sheepshead Bay, and other coastal neighborhoods would probably be most at risk.
Lost In Greenwood Heights has absolutely nothing to worry about, being near the highest point in Brooklyn. -

So I should keep the condo 'til it's shore-front?

We also had a resurgence of bites in our household this past week. It was bad in October and then got better once the cold weather set in. Strangely, this summer, we didn't have any mosquito problems. Does anyone know if the city is still spraying for West Nile in the summer months? Perhaps that explains why they weren't a problem then... or perhaps we were just lucky. Or perhaps the mosquito population is adapting to global warming and will continue to arrive in autumn rather than summer?

To get an idea of where the coastline will be, try this tool.

Some folks on 5th Av will have a nice view out over Gowanus bay. From PH, we should be able to see North to Williamsburg Island and over to the Queens Islands, and look out East over Carrol Gardens Point towards the Jersey City Peninsula. -

The ones who are truly farked are the people in eastern NJ. Even if the level rises 2 meters, which would barely affect the 5 boroughs at all (at least directly), large sections of NJ would be underwater.

The 'easy' way to fix that is a pair of dykes joining Staten Is. to Jersey City and Perth Amboy where the bridges currently are. They could call it "New Amsterdam".

Yeah! I was getting destroyed back in Oct., then it stopped. But, I got two new bites last night! Found the guy in the morning and took care of him. I have no idea how they get in.

i had one buzzing around my ear last night. he must be friends with the cockroach that came in a few days ago. i think they're throwing little global warming parties and laughing at me.

There was an article in the Times about a building that was forced to stop construction and there was a hole in the ground from the work stoppage. That article claimed a high increase in vermin and mosquitoes. There are a ton of "holes in the ground" in the neighborhood these days and I'd bet that is the primary source of these skeeters. Also, there is a guy down the block (St. Johns btw. Wash/Classon) from me who owns an above ground pool, but didn't use it at all this summer. Maybe that thing is also semi-full with water and festering these shitty little beasts.
Damn the rain, the weather, the construction and the pools. -
maybe it's time to contact the Dept of Health, who can spray any suspect sites and breeding ponds. Although if winter ever decides to show up, that should keep the buggerz under control for a few months. I'm already dreading the summer... it's they're bad now, imagine next July. Ugh.

I called Vector Control at the DOH last week and left a few messages about the mosquito problem, but nobody called me back. According to their web site, the city stopped doing mosquito control in early October. Maybe more people should call and complain? Couple nights ago I got two bites on my face, one on my finger, and two on my arm. Ouch! -

However, I have heard that when a lot come out of "hibernation" in the middle of a warm spell in the winter, and then the weather snaps back enough fast enough to kill a big chunk of them it can reduce the population for the following spring/summer. I've always heard this--it may be a good time to research it.

Things are tough all over:
Mosquitos Still terrorizing Philadelphians thanks to lack of a hard winter freeze. Better give blood while you have it.

I haven't noticed the mosquitoes (I always found a few bourbons an excellent insect repellent... but only fair to middling as a human repellent) but I have an endless supply of mice.

Oh man,
I created a login just to respond to this! I actually live in manhatten but my wife and I have been PLAGUED by mosquitos for months now. When it gets really cold like this they generally dissapear again, but even so I saw one last night. The weird thing is that we did not have them in the summer at all. Only in the fall and now winter. But hey are terrible, and we have so many. We can easily kill 4 or 5 every night. our walls are all marked up with crushed mosquitos or as I like to call them, little victories. But seriously it is unreal. I am losing so much sleep running around hunting them down at 3am. We are also on the 6th floor. I did not knwo mosquitos flew that high. There is a large patch of staning water below us, but I cant get to it. Other than that I cant find any other source of the problem. I am moving to LA. -
I keep gettin bit on my hands.
