Just moving in
Hi all,
glad to have found this forum.
I will be moving to your neck of the woods this coming friday.
22nd between 6th and 7th.
Here the questions :
1. Whats the closest entrance to the cemetary?
2. Where is next dry-cleaning service/laundry room?
3. Deli/Supermarket?
4. Pub/Bar/Restaurant?
5. Food Delivery services?
Lots of questions.
Any general info about the neighbourhood is welcome as well.
Also if someone wants to grab a beer one night I am very interested.
Let me know.
Very excited about my new place and neighbourhood.

welcome to the nabe.
here are my (non definitive) answers:
1. ppw at 20th st, or 5th ave/25(?)
2. one on 8th ave 14th(?), but we use a place in windsor terrace.
3. try the polish provision place on 5th ave and 16th(?). there's a key food in windor terrace
4. barbq on 6th and 20th is cool, kitchen right next door is good food.
5. you mean like fresh direct? -
Check several of the threads in this forum for answers to 99% of your questions. Too busy to send links right now...
Welcome.

Thanks guys.
I tried Kitchen and absolutely loved it last night, came right back to it for lunch today.
The Supermarket on 25th and 4th seems good, anyone has experience with it?
Also found a couple of Laundry places on 5th between 23rd and 19th.
Really loving this area already.
With delivery I meant restaurants that deliver, but that has been covered in the other thread. -
The delivery thread I mentioned...

And what's up with the new laundry place on 5th/23rd-22nd? -
Thanks.
I went to R&F Laundry on 5th and 21st(??), open 24h and does pickup and delivery if need be.
Not directly neighbourhood related but has anyone ever tried Fresh direct?
I am not sure if I want to plunk my money down for a huge chain, and drive more of the Supermarkets into crisis, but it seems decent enough.
Any comments/expieriences to share? -
The supermarket on 25th and 4th is BAD NEWS. It smells horribly of chemicals, which you can taste even in cooked food. I went there once when I first moved to the neighborhood, but never again.
Eagle Provisions (18th and 5th) or C-Town (9th b/c 5th and 6th), which will deliver.
also, BBQ is great for food and drinks.
Living Room Lounge is a good bar space, but always barren. -
Thanks.
Ill check out Eagle Provisioners. As I walked by they seemed to have a good butcher which is hard to come by anywhere.
Where is Living Room Lounge, I actually like barren.... -
Living Room Lounge is on 23rd Street at 5th Avenue.
-
National Supermarket (25th/4th) has come a long way lately. For SOME things it is fine. I am not sure why they got rid of their outdoors veggie market along the side...THAT used to be the best part.
Pick and choose when you are their, a mixed bag, but good in a pinch, depending on what you eat. -
Eagle Outfitters closes way early, very inconvenient for me.
But there is another supermarket right across the street from them, that seems to just have opened, looked clean and organized to me.
But they dont sell beer which is a major setback. -
BTW, Eagle rocks!
Also, Steve's C-Town is a walk (9th St. btwn 5th/6th Aves) but worth it. Best in the 'nabe so far (though Eagle's beer selection is excellent). For folks comments, here a thread on the store, both pro and con.
http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=31663
For the record, we have always found Steve's great. -
Thanks for your help guys.
Have you been to the Polish restaurant on 22nd and 6th?
Molens (or similar)
There also is a mexican place right across the street. -
Taqueria DF rocks! The owners Pedro & Tony are great. Good eat-in or delivery. Cal/Mex style with great vegetarian options...carne as well. And pretty good margaritas...
Milans (next to Smolen's bar) is open on again/off again. never tried it. -
Just my two cents:
The grocery store across from Eagle is not new, but recently redone. They left most of the food on the shelves while doing the work. They're fine if you just need a can of soup or cleaning supplies, and if you don't mind a layer of dust. Otherwise, check the expiration date! (This was a consistent problem there even before the remodel) Any pastas and grains I've bought there have been bug infested. Beware!
The best grocery options are definitely Eagle (on the weekends), Steve's C-Town (and the B63 bus), or Fresh Direct.
Smolen is a great neighborhood bar for a quiet night in the 'hood or a drink before heading out. Their prices are great, as is their Polish beer selection. The players on the pool table are very serious, so if you're looking for a casual game, you're better off at Living Room Lounge.
The 5th Ave laundry choices: the 24 hour place on 20th has been in a perpetual state of renovation (colapsed ceiling, exposed wires) for years, but they are open 24 hours. I prefer the place between 22nd and 23rd. They are clean and friendly (as laundromats go) and have stuck around late for me when I've been in a pinch. You could also load up the cart and roll down to 4th Ave and 19th to Clean Rite. They are also open 24 hour.
Welcome to the hood! You'll have to explore some places for yourself, because everyone has a different tolerance level for distance, cleanliness, business hours, etc. If you try Milan's, let us all know how it is because I've never been either. -
The laundromat on 5th Avenue b/w 22nd and 23rd isn't new, they just recently got a new sign. The owners are very nice.
The best supermarket around here is definitely C-Town on 9th St. It's a ten minute walk or easy trip on the B63 bus, which stops at 21st St. I avoid the National Supermarket on 4th Avenue like the plague. It smells like barf. Eagle Provisions is good for beer, but check the expiration dates.
Tacqueria DF is decent, so is Rachel's burritos on 5th Avenue and 8th St.
Living Room Lounge isn't that bad; they have burlesque shows, karaoke, and Blue Moon on tap. Yum.
Check out the "Park Slope" forums for more info on restaurants. Many places in P-Slope deliver to Greenwood Hts. -
You guys werent kidding about Eagle Outfitters, great beer selection. And generally well stocked.
Ill check out C-Town as well this week.
Was going to try Milan, but it was closed everytime I tried.
Except for kitchen bar, what are good places for breakfast/brunch??
I love this 'hood except for the guy who lives above me and is making noise from midnight to 6am....... -
Still no luck with Milan. Its closed everytime I try.
I saw it open the other day but had to leg it to the Subway. -

I think it's an "Associated". Cross Prospect Avenue and there is a "Met Foods". Very nice people, but not much in the way of actual "Food".

22st and 5th Ave. -
Jubilat has better Polish meats then Eagle Provisions.
-
I found Milan open on a Saturday afternoon, when I had 2 Slovak senior citizens to entertain. They lurved it!
Pierogis, halushki, the greatest hits of mittleurope.
where is Jubilat? -
Jubilat is about two blocks closer to Park Slope on the same side of the street

Hi,
Moving to the hood in a week and this thread has been very helpful, thanks!
What I want to know, and have not receieved an answer to my email, so maybe someone here can help - Fresh Direct obviously delivers to this area, as I notice many of the posters here use them - but when I entered my soon to be zip code on their site it said delivery was unavailable. Does anyone know what the borders are? I'll be living on 20th between 4th and 5th. I want Fresh Direct!!
Also wanted to ressurrect this thread to see if anyone has any other suggestions for bars and restaurants in the area. I've heard mixed reviews on Kitchen, and I'd never heard of the others but will try them all eventually, I'm sure.
Thanks again, this board is great! -
I am on 22nd between 6th and 7th and i get Fresh Direct regularly. No problems at all.
-
kaiserkai, if you don't mind me asking, what is your zip code?
-
I believe the zip is different above and below 5th ave. Above 5th ave is 11215 and can receive Fresh Direct deliveries. Maybe if you call them and explain where you live, they can make an exception.

Hmm, thanks. Figures it would be 5th Ave... I'm so close I can taste it! Has anyone ever heard of them making an exception like that? I'm definitely going to try. Now, to find a phone # for them where I can actually get a human being on the phone... they haven't even answered my email from like 3 days ago. :x -
Yes it is 11215.
Nice avatar!!!
