Issues with the screen at Cobble Hill movie theatre — Brooklynian

Issues with the screen at Cobble Hill movie theatre

(To be clear, I am talking about the smaller 4-screen at Court and Kane, not the multiplex at Court and Atlantic.)

My question is this: has anyone else noticed that the screens themselves seem to be severly underlit, causing the movies to look much darker than they should?

Also -- does anyone know the correct terms for these lights? I wanted to speak to the manager on my last visit, but wanted to be able to use the right term. Could it be a problem with the projector? Or the projector being set incorrectly? I'm sure we have a movie-theatre-phile somewhere on there that can answer this...

(And yes, this theatre shows a lot of indie movies -- which is great! -- which will have lower budgets and thus not look as sharp, but this dimness in the screen seems to occur regardless of studio or indie pic.)

Thanks!

  • always seemed fine to me, and such a quaint theater
  • i think you may be on to something t.p. i can't say for sure as i rarely see the same movie on two different theater screens, but i wouldn't be surprised if things weren't quite up to par there. i mean, i love that we have that theater and all, don't get me wrong. i noticed over the weekend -- not really the same thing, but somewhat related (even though this is a fairly common problem) -- that the soundtrack was visible along the left side of 'pan's labyrinth' (in one of the upstairs theaters). that was a super dark movie (thematically and photographically), so possibly a good candidate to test your theory. by the way, i think it may just be called the projection, or maybe the projection bulb or projection light. i could be wrong.
  • yes! i saw hot fuzz there and could barely see the movie it was so dark.
also, they project it much larger than the screen so they cut off about a foot of the image on all sides.
i only go there if i'm desperate for a flick and too lazy to go into manhattan...
