Beware the *new* ROYALE — Brooklynian

Beware the *new* ROYALE

anonymous
edited November -1 in Park Slope
A little tip to those long time Park Slope folks who dig having a drink at Royale and listening to progressive, modern rock. Learn from this mistake. I used to go to Royale a lot, it's a very groovy bar, that is, until recently. The place has apparently changed hands and kids, it's not pretty. We went there about two weeks ago and as the evening progressed, sure enough I started to notice a change in the music and then the crowd. And while we all sat in a booth realizing what a mistake we had made, our table became increasingly surrounded by angry, pissed off looking ghetto thugs. No joke, I think we sat at "their" table. I thought we had confined dumb ass white boys and dumb ass ghetto fucks to 200 Fifth? Think I'm lying? We went across the street to Commonwealth and watched as no less than five police cars pulled up and shut the place down. It's fucking awful, truly awful. And don't get all annoyed at me sounding slightly racist. You know I'm right, where there are ghetto thugs (i.e., young, black men), there is sure to be police activity and I wasn't proved wrong.

  • Thanks for the tip. We were thinking of going but I don't do places that accomodate such crowds.
  • yeah, you do sound kinda racist.

which is not to say the venue hasn't changed. i'll take your word (with a grain of (white) salt.
  • Does this mean the ghetto thugs have cleared out of Bar Reis?
  • I told y'all this in the "Best Bar" thread, as an employee who got ousted in the changeover 2 months ago. The new manager is a Manhattan-based, self described "ball-buster' who thought that clearing out all the regular employees and hiring his friends and assorted bimbos would be the ticket to success. I'm no more bitter than the average unemployed person, but I really want to see this blow up in his face.

The old crowd was way mixed on the weekends, and of course there would be the inevitable complaints from some of the more, um, "sheltered" Slopers. This new crowd is totally different. Management is actively soliciting the bottle service, thug and wanna-be thug crowd; no difference if they come from the neighborhood, East New York, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst or points inbetween.

It ain't a color thing, people. It's a "pack the bar with the lowest common denominator" thing. So much as was said to us former employeeas after the purge.

Works for me. One of the "bimbos" is the owner's cousin and is smoking hot. I go there just to see her. The other girl bartender is hot as well. I have always seen the clientele as being mixed after the change of hands. The owner sometimes checks IDs at the doors, and has always been nice.

If you want to listen to Interpol, just go across the street (or better yet, go back to the Midwest). If blacks and latinos scare you (and it seems it does) then don't bother with Royale.
  • Yeah, getting fired 'cause you're not a bimbo is a good thing, right?

    p.s.-not from the Midwest, btw,
  • Subject: I know it's hard to hear

I'm the original poster. And first, I'm not from the midwest, I'm from NYC. And because it makes someone cringe doesn't mean my statement is inaccurate, it's just kind of a bummer. That is to say, blacks and latinos don't scare me, and I'm not a "sheltered sloper." But the truth is, and ask any cop willing to be honest instead of politically correct, that bars packed with young black men, disproportionately have more problems. More fights, more calls to 911 regarding guns, etc. You know why? Because they really do disproportionately have more fights, pull out more guns, etc. And that's the crowd that is in Royale now. Listen, I could talk all day about our racist society and how because of that we ended up with a whole slew of insecure black men who look for their self-esteem in guns, fights and pit bulls. But that doesn't change that what I said is accurate. We have just been taught to cringe at statements like mine because we don't want to believe it's pretty accurate.
  • i've always liked the royale
gonna go have to check it out for meself......

That's capitalism for ya. For those that don't like, North Korea and Cuba are lovely places to live in.

Hey, attractive men make money for bars too! The guys that were fired from Royale were good looking--especially the one guy that was a dead-ringer for Marc Ford. And why do you think there are tons of women hanging around when Francis is working at Buttermilk?

It doesn't sound like you've hung out in many bars with black men, or else you'd recognize that the "thug" persona is not a monolithic one any more than the "hipster" persona is for young white men. There are plenty of black men (young and old) that don't carry weapons or feel the need to start a fight or own a pit bull as a way of making a statement to the world about their own esteem issues.

I don't necessarily have a problem with the reason you posted this to begin with (the Royale has changed) but to say that "we had confined dumb ghetto fucks to 200 Fifth" and to equate ghetto thugs with black men generally or to ignore the fact that the bars and clubs in NYC that have gotten the most negative press in NYC in the last year actually cater to young whites is just straight up racist.

Your statements aren't "pretty accurate". They are pretty much based upon your own perceptions and are presented without any support other than your own opinion. Does 200 5th with all of its "dumb ass white boys and dumb ass ghetto fucks" have regular fights and calls to 911 regarding guns?

You are more than welcome to your opinions, but don't try to couch them as fact or suggest that we'd all agree if we were honest because I don't
  • Thanks, homeowner. Always on the money.

Aside from underlining your point(s) I'd also like to add that as erskelyne previously pointed out, the deal with the new Royale and elsewhere like it is one of courting the lowest common denominator. Any one of us that frequently partakes of the neighborhood bar scene knows that idiots and thugs--and wannabes--come in all colors. After all, that melee I came across outside Bar Reis a few months back was a bunch of K-Fed lookalikes. Furthermore, I wouldn't be surprised if the disruptive quantity WERE NOT from the neighborhood.

Two years ago I was DJing on the weekends at another, now extinct, 5th Ave spot that went for that crowd, especially on Fridays. Not a mixed crowd, but a mixed GHETTO crowd. (In case that needs clarifying, the patrons were WHITE, BLACK and BROWN.) All equally annoying, disruptive and disrespectful. During my stint I had a birthday and celebrated it there on a Saturday. That night, 75% of the place was comprised of MY friends (who are from all colors of the rainbow). A fun time was had by all and at the end of the evening the owner asked me how he could draw THAT crowd every weekend. I guess the new Royale would rather not.

ParkSlope95, what I'm saying is this: if you get beat up by a Hell's Angel don't make blanket statements about people who ride motorcycles, or have long hair, etc. Dig?
  • I have been to the "new" Royale, and I don't think there is anything wrong with it. In fact, the fixed it up a bit (finally put in some lighting instead of bare lightbulbs). Every time the crowd is mixed, but never any ghetto elements. Sounds like someone is just scared of black people. Not surprising considering there are almost no black people in Park Slope, it's not the most welcoming environment for minorities.

Perhaps they have a certain party on a given night? I've been there weeknights and on Saturday.
  • interestingly, I've seen bottle service at freakin' SouthPaw. and at every fancy-ass club in Manhattan. I'm not sure what is ghetto about bottle service.

  • this whole thread is racialist!!!!! [-(
  • hmm..sooo Alafairnadia, Emily, et al where's all your outraged self righteousness now??

What are you even talking about?

That's just silly. When someone doesn't jump in on a thread, it's not necessarily a lack of interest or some big conspiracy or something. I can't speak for others, but even though I thought the original post was pretty offensive, I haven't had as much time for posting over the last couple of days and I thought Homeowner and others summed up what I probably would have wanted to say better than I could have anyway. Gee, I guess that makes me some sort of evil, awful hypocrite then. Pfft.
  • Carnivore..what's wrong with your eyes?? lol

Apollonia666..I was not addressing you..so no need to get defensive :)
  • thalia:

who counts as "et al"? just so it's clear who should be defensive.
  • thalia wrote: Apollonia666..I was not addressing you..so no need to get defensive :)
Sorry, but I couldn't tell who your "et al" was meant to include. Regardless, Alafairnadia and Emily may have similar reasons for not posting. So I think what I said about it not meaning diddlysquat when someone doesn't post stands.
  • i've witnessed fights outside snooky's pub near my abode. it was fantastic to see middle-aged guys ('white' for those who need a racial marker) rolling around on the sidewalk in a violent embrace.
  • Park Slope is so weird. It's like Great Neck or something, without the disproportionate Jewish element.
  • parkslope95, if you ask any cop willing to be honest and not just politically correct, they will also tell you that most instances of date rape, serial rape and serial murder are white, insecure, sheltered men between the ages of 28 and 45. so i guess it might be better if you too, stayed at home on the weekends.
  • Hey ParkSlope95,

You're 100% correct. All the media shrews who want to snicker at your comments will secretly nod in agreement and feel guilty about it. Oh, and did I mention that they'll take your advice and AVOID the place too?

    We all know it's true.
  • I love how the owners put all the reviews on Citysearch

  • well,

I just read the artical and I was really taken back by it. New York City is built by all kinds of people, from all walks of life. it's really sad that in this day and age we can't take it for what it is. You don't like black people then go back home to your little town "Gringolandia". This city will never change and that's what makes it great. And besides it's fucking Brooklyn what the fuck do you expect? Get out of my city!!!!
