Mugging last night at Sterling and Butler Place (03-22-07)

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up that a guy walking home around 8:30 pm was mugged last night by a group of about 5 teenagers at the intersection of Sterling and Butler Place. He was talking on his cell phone when the kids approached him, maced him, and kicked him in the head before taking his cell phone and wallet and running off. We live nearby, heard the commotion outside and found the victim lying on the sidewalk. Several people called the cops and an ambulance. The victim was ultimately OK but was taken to the emergency room to get checked out.

Jokes aside, i'm pretty sick of the petty violence. And glad the guy is okay. I wouldn't want to be the next mugger to get in his way. Payback's a mu-fucka.

and, frankly, I've been getting a lot of shit this 'spring' (the last two days. this is beyond what I've experienced here before and in harlem, so I'm a bit confused. hopefully it's all due to funky weather and not an influx of horridly obnoxious teens.

it is for this very reason that that I ALWAYS view teenagers ascriminals until until proven otherwise. Lets hope the cops (or someone else) dish out some real punishment to these pieces of garbage

I agree. Teenagers are a pretty contemptible bunch. I think that the venerable Armchair is on to something. People who do things like this eventually wind up getting caught. That's what prisons are for. I hope that as the neighborhood continues to gentrify these lowlife types will get priced out and replaced by normal people.

And sure enough, someone will get on and trace these crimes to (a) a lack of rec centers or (b) the unfriendly attitude of yuppies and hipsters.

In the meantime, people, keep your wits about you. Tuck away the iPod and postpone the phone calls for the 5-10 minutes that it takes you to arrive at your destination.

My roomie got mugged last November (day before his b'day, actually), right on front of our building. 10:30 at night, people everywhere (Eastern Parkway), he was on his bike. They knocked him off of it, and (he thinks there were 3 or 4 of them) and proceeded to ask him for "the money." He had a bag of food on him, so the cops seem to think they thought he was a delivery guy. (I kinda disagree with this. Yeah, he had food and was on a bike, but he's like, a six foot tall white guy- not your typical delivery person). Anyhooey.
Roomie got hit in the head with something metallic. Still has the scar. They got nothin' but the food.
No bike, no money. Indian cuisine!

The problem is that our society no longer makes adequate use of their violent tendencies, not to mention valuable mugging skills. What I think might be most effective would be bring back the draft, lower the age to 16, and put them on patrol in Baghdad where they're clearly needed.

yeah. harassed. not mugged (poor guy! so scary. but I have the solution - a super seekrit cell phone accessory that makes it look very old school and undesirable). lots of "hey baby, can I get your number?" closely followed by a "bitch" or "fuck you" (the latter was actually this afternoon, just after a trip to FAIRWAY, with my hands full of grocery bags) when I just smile and say "sorry, I'm unavailable". like I said, I haven't had experiences like this ever in nyc. aggressive pursuit - weird, but I can deal with it. aggressive pursuit and then verbally violent reaction when refused - not ok. I'm worried about the next step, I guess.

That's really, really scary. I don't understand if guys think that's behavior that we respond to or if they understand that it's scary and intimidating.

well, like I keep thinking. the OP describes a horrid event to someone who is, while not responsible for his assault, someone who is otherwise occupied while walking home. and, despite my (to appropriate the thread) my bravado walking three steps from car to door post-grocery shopping, which is otherwise occupied from paying attention to the universe, I got harassed. so there is some shit up. I'm hoping, as I said above, that it's spring to blame. I love seasonal blame.

I think this rhetorical question deserves a rhetorical answer. Let's start by saying "some guys" rather than implying all guys, because such behavior is equally perplexing to the majority. The last time I couldn't avoid knowing such people was a few dickheads in school/college. They didn't have much else going for them, and would harass girls outside of hours and guys during hours. I think it was about power, intimidation, and pecking order within their group, not about getting a response from the target. I'm sorry but the people doing shit like this were doing it before they started getting priced out. When I was a teenager I hung out in some pretty grimy neighborhoods (I was a bad kid). Shit like that happened all the time. I sure hope you were being facetious.
