Pet owners beware: stray voltage on Wash betw. Fult Ga

Hi folks. I just wanted to pass along the alarming news that a few dogs were shocked last week by stray voltage on the sidewalk next to the construction site on the east side of Washington between Fulton & Gates. My dog jumped & yiped and has since completely refused to go anywhere near that intersection. ConEd was called by someone in my building whose dog was also shocked. They came to address the situation & found 56 volts running loose--the melting snow & puddles & salt presumably helped to conduct it to the dog's paws. While ConEd reports the problem is resolved, I think it's prudent to keep dogs (not to mention toddlers!!) away from that site, just to be safe.

I was also curious to know if other people had the same experience with their dogs this week.

I know that on St James between Gates and Greene there is a similar situation. I believe it was a manhole cover. ConEd was not able to take care of it in a timely fashion, so they hired a car to sit over it to prevent anyone getting shocked.

Subject: An old case

In the spring of 2006, there was stray voltage on the west side of St. James b/t Fulton and Gates. After I called to report it, ConEd actually came within hours and followed up with me to make sure my dog was ok. I thought they took it seriously, but it is very alarming to know there are so many other spots around us where this is happing.

has the Con Ed hot spot been fixed?

In general it is a good idea to keep your pets and toddlers from any ConEd facility (Manholes, grates, poles, anything attached to a pole). Their distribution system is old and even though they are constantly checking for stray voltage, it can appear and disappear at a moments notice depending on the conditions.

I'm not trying to alarm anyone but it doesn't hurt to be careful
