the US mail lost my taxes — Brooklynian

the US mail lost my taxes

it's true. i sent them to my accountant to get them done. i scheduled a "carrier pickup" so the mailperson came to me to get the priority envelope. it had a tracking # for delivery confirmation... only that # seems never to have been entered into the system.

all my 1099s, W2s, etc. everything. poof.

this is up there with the giant envelope of checks i sent to my bank in november that never arrived. and the birthday card my mom sent from jersey that took 3 weeks to get here.

WTF? how is it that everyone in brooklyn is complaining about the mail, yet NOTHING gets done about it?

do i call marty markowitz?

  • Thus it has always been.

I went to a party once with a friend who worked for the Brooklyn Post Office something like 22 years ago...everyone there was on crack. No joke.

I seem to recall once they found this abandoned building full of mail some mailman had dumped there! Mailing out birthday party invitations 19 years ago was a joke - invitations arrived in New Jersey and CT before they arrived at my neighbors house around the corner.

Having moved back, I have not forgotten. I have packages mailed to my office and I will be using federal express to mail important stuff or mail it from the post office in Manhattan near my job!
  • I always take everything important to the UPS store. They've never lost a thing.

Do you print the label off the web first and just drop it off or do you pay there?

I recommend using an accountant that does everything electronically / by fax.
  • yes, i just had to send him all the 1099s, etc.

they have no tracked my package to stamford, even though it's going to new canaan. i sent it on the 28th.

when i called and spoke with the customer service rep, she told me they get tons of complaints about brooklyn mail. obviously, this does not make them do anything about brooklyn mail.

ergo, as a former reporter/editor i can tell you there is only ONE way to fix the mail situation in brooklyn: get it written about in the daily news or even better, the NYT. how can we make that happen?
  • in fact, to that end, i offer you these addresses. write a letter!

  • Call the Daily News and NYT and see what happens.

I think each 1099/W2 comes with a copy for you to keep. Maybe that is enough to copy and re-send (via UPS) to your accountant again.

It's only been 6 days, so hopefully the package will turn up soon.
  • Do you know which post office it went to?

My sister received her tax forms back about a week after filing them... because the post office somehow destroyed the envelope carrying all the forms. Sis found the new envelope with a huge clear address area (big enough that, oh, you could read all of her personal info--SS, employers, etc.) right back at her place, rather than on its merry way to the IRS.

Nothing like the USPS to make an already unpleasant experience juuuuuust a little more annoying.
  • it was williamsburg, where i work. i called for a carrier pick-up to get it and some other packages i was sending out, and i printed posted for all of them. this package seems never to have been entered into the system, at least until it hit CT this morning. where it's been for the last week is anyone's guess
  • The Federal Income Tax is voluntary anyways.
  • Looks like the Daily News covered this story about a postal service experience in Kensington - it's not one I remember hearing about.

Losing your tax returns is a whole lot more serious than my most recent incident. My cellphone provider just cut off service b/c a bill was returned to them as "address unknown".... WTF? The last 5 years' worth of bills all reached me.... I just put it down to the usual sloppy service and move on, but reading about how many other people tolerate this on a daily basis makes me want to follow-up and get something done.

The main thing stopping me is that I'm a US resident, not a citizen - I don't have a vote, so I always feel like my voice doesn't count.

Don't worry, even if you are a US citizen your voice doesn't count.
