Anyone want to split a CSA share? — Brooklynian

Anyone want to split a CSA share?

bean
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights
Does anyone want to go 50/50 on a CSA share with me? My partner from last year is buying a full share this year, and it's too much food for just me.

You'll get fresh organic veggies until mid- to late-November. There's also an option for a fruit share, and the CSA is currently investigating adding meat, eggs, and honey. This year's pickup will be on Thursdays from 430 to 730 at PS9 on Underhill between Bergen and St Marks. Read more at http://www.prospectheightscsa.org.

Applications are due May 1st, so let me know if you're interested.

The price varies depending on your income bracket.

You would pay half of either:
$280 for a single person making under $40K
    $370 for $40-$70K
    $420 for $70K+

Plus we'd split the $20 administrative fee.

I forgot to note that pickups start in early to mid June, depending on how the growing season is going.
  • Does anyone have a picture of what a typical weekly share looks like? I don't have much sense of how much food you get for that price. It definitely sounds worth it for $280, but for $420, you could get over $20 worth every week at the greenmarket and get to pick out what you want. Is the amount of food in a share comparable to what that would buy you at the greenmarket?
  • The quantity varies depending on the weather. Last year was a particularly bad year for the farmer and the shares were smaller as a result. During the height of summer, half a share basically got me through a week of dinner, but I also eat out a couple nights a week and would supplement from the greenmarket from time to time.

I actually conducted a cost analysis study for a non-profit and shopped for similar items at the Grand Army Plaza greenmarket to compare prices. They came out to be even. I used organic prices as much as possible, so the costs were higher than for your average shopper who probably buys mostly conventional veg at the greenmarket. But, again, my understanding is that last year's shares were much smaller than in year's past.

Overall it seems that the people who were most satisfied with the CSA experience are those who would like to form an economic partnership with a single farmer and those who can afford to be flexible with the quantity and variety of produce.
  • Subject: CSA

We were part of the Cobble Hill CSA last year. This year they are looking for a new location, so I'm not sure yet what we're going to do - if we're going to stick with them or try to find a more convenient CSA location. But we really enjoyed it. Picking up was tough (because we live in Bed Stuy and sometimes it was hot out, and a lot to lug). But we were introduced to some unusual veggies, and we felt good about supporting a small, close-by, organic farm (mostly-organic, for the fruit). The Bed-Stuy CSA (which is out of my way subway-wise, despite being in my 'hood) did a cost comparison http://bedstuycsa.wetpaint.com/page/IS+the+BED-STUY+CSA+a+good+deal? and say that it's about the same or better as buying similar produce at the grocery store or other markets (and I think the Bed-Stuy CSA costs about the same as others). (Super Foodtown has some good organic stuff lately - and they're putting in a deli olive bar!)

Carnivore - I took pictures of our weekly share. I got a fruit share as well as a vegetable share. First. here are a few fruit share pictures:

I'll see if the image works - if it does I'll post more.

EDIT to add: my posting the picture didn't work. I right-clicked on the picture, stored in Yahoo, copied the URL, pasted it into the message, highlighted it, and then hit the Img button. What am I doing wrong? Maybe because it's on Yahoo, not a public photo sharing site?

Please PM me if you're interested in splitting a share; info below [from Bean's earlier posts]

  • Did bean already find someone to share with, then?

(Merged because there might be more people looking to share, and putting questions in the same thread should help you find each other.)
  • I am interested in splitting a share. Anyone want to go in on it??
  • Sorry, I did find someone to share with. But I think it's great that more people are interested in joining up! We're also looking for volunteers if anyone wants to donate some time to helping with operations.

In addition to possible eggs, meat, and honey, we might also be adding on a bread/tortilla share.
