noise complaint

My street is residential, but a nearby neighbor seems to be renting out space as a cabaret or private club or something and every weekend there is REALLY loud, amplified music playing until the wee hours...the water on my bedside table vibrates with the bass...and there is often shreeking and yelling on the sidewalk as people come and go. Anyone dealt with this type of thing before?

  • Lets start with the address, and we'll take it from there. If it's an illegal social club it's pretty easy to nuisance abate them.
  • Bedford Ave, kitty corner across from the gas station car wash on Bedford and Lincoln. I feel super snitchy....wish I could appeal to them directly to set some guidelines about hours and noiselevels...but I don't know how they'd respond. My feeling is that if they try kept the hours/levels more reasonable...I would tolerate this, and leave it be. But I do NOT want to "tangle" with them. I'm new to the block, an interloper.

There are no businesses on this block. Honestly I'd be surprised if the place was legal...and I don't know in the building deal with it.

Uuh meant to type "I don't know how the people living in the building (i.e the tenants on the floor above the club) deal with it."
  • good luck. i had one behind me a few years ago. it was on park near flatbush and they had parties every weekend until 4 a.m. huge outdoor speakers, barbecue grills going and tons of people. one time my parents were visiting and asked me to turn the stereo down. they thought the music was coming from inside my apt. many times i called guiliani's much-touted quality of life hotline to complain. they did absolutely nothing. maybe you'll have better luck with kwoc.
  • Are you referring to 1524 Bedford Ave basement? If not, post the Address and hours of operation. It's not snitchin to complain about noise and illegal social clubs. You have a reasonable expectation to peace and quiet in your home too, without complaints from the community, these places usually dont get addressed until theres either a shooting, or other serious incidents there.
  • It's pretty hard to do anything about noise, as I found out in my old place. You can make a complaint but chances are they'll turn it back up as soon as the cops leave. Buy good noise blocking ear muffs--the kind that people use for shooting. And keep a log of when you do call the cops with a noise complaint and the reference number they give you. Make sure you point out that it is a repeat problem when you call. These people are being jerky and ruining your sleep. Fuck 'em, snitch away. You don't have to give your name when you make a complaint so they won't know.
  • One of the only things ghetto people can impose on others is loud music. I've had friends whose apartment buildings have turned into a contest to see who could play their music the loudest almost every night.

    Call 311.

That's the one. Do they operate legally?
  • 100% illegal! The Friday night party was shut down before it even started. One more incident at that place and nuisance abatement proceedings will commence. Feel free to call the 77 precinct the next party you hear there. The Conditions Unit will happily address the issue.

depends. if you're calling the p.d. to shut down an illegal social club, maybe you can call anonymously.

but that's not the case if you're just calling 311 to complain about a noncriminal nuisance, like a barking dog. they will take a noise complaint anonymously and give you a complaint number, but then, as far as i can tell, do nothing with it.

if you want the dep to take action, you have to give your name.
