complaint about 77th precinct — Brooklynian

complaint about 77th precinct

uhm i went the other day to file a complaint at the 77th precinct (aggravated harassment. like, a somewhat serious thing, you know?) and i was told to call back in 2 days to get my complaint #.

i called back tonight and they couldn't even find a record of me coming in and filing the report! how sketchy is that?

  • sketchy. call trish.
  • Aggravated Harassment = Serious?????????????? Tell that to the guy who got shot and killed on St Marks ave today.
  • King, what's the count so far? 4?
  • To be fair, K-wac, if i went to my precinct to file a report only to be told two days later they had no idea who i was or any trace of the paperwork i took the time to fill out, i'd be unhappy too. Listen, i'm a big supporter of the boys in blue, so i'm not one to turn this into a "bleepin' cops" rant like you may find from other members. But i do take offense to your belittling the OP just because you find the crime against her to be minor compared to some of the horrors you see every week. That does not mean she deserved to be lost in the bureaucracy which has overwhelmed the 77th. She's not a number; she's a citizen.
  • Before there is any talk about "the boys in blue" or the "bleeping cops" can we first confirm that brooklynleather even dealt with a cop and not a civilian. There is usually a civilian who takes walk in complaints at the window and not a police officer.
  • What the fuck ever! Let's talk about "professionalism." If I went to my job and preformed inadequately, I'd be questioned. Take some responsibility. Your department/precint is doing an awful job. Should we simply magnify it? Should we demand the 77th become a Manhattan police department with ribbons (the typewriter type?) C'mon. How much fucking empathy/sympathy do you guys want until you're found to be ACCOUNTABLE?

2001 WAS A LONG TIME AGO, YEAH?

Is that even in our neighborhood? Love the throat sliced in a bathtub having lived nowhere near us and you called it Prospect Heights. Make us shiver KWOAC. I'm shitting my pants. You are scaring us to death.

    St. Marks and where????????????????????
  • :-s dude don't shit your pants.

You and KWOAC bump heads too damn much.

  • Em26, how about takin' a rest from the bold type?
Already said I'm there for thursday.
  • What the bold typing is bothering you?

I like dark writing for some reason.....even in my own handwriting I press down hard on the pencil to make sure it isn't light....not so hard that the pencil breaks , though.

I also saw that you said you'll be there , but I had already posted that before I noticed....so I'll edit that out.

She was in a police uniform and signed the document po [last name] which I assumed was Police Officer...

Anyway, I didn't want to get into the details of the crime, but yes it was a serious threat.
  • Sorry, who is Trish?

And just what, sir, does that have to do with the price of milk? If the OP went to the precinct, spoke with an employee, filled out paperwork, and got lost in the shuffle, why should it matter what the credentials are of the person she dealt with if she spoke with the person the precinct had assigned to the job? Irregardless, if the person, civilian or officer, was standing at the window working a job in the 77th, then that person is a representative of the precinct just like anyone else who works there.

Doesn't she go by "Tish"? This is what I assume she meant, though.
  • To clarify, my post wasn't to defend incompetence, rather to shed light on the severity of other issues facing the 77 precinct. Do reports get lost or misplaced? Yes... Do reports not get taken? Ofcourse . The complaint reporting system has many flaws. The report often floats around from cop to supervisor to Police Administrative Asst back to Cops and Supervisors in Crime Analysis. and when they're done, quality assurance gets a crack at them. This leaves little room for error. Sometimes cops even take reports for incidents that don't fall into the complaint reporting system guidlines; leading to complaints not being entered into the system. If the original poster has a problem, she can return to the precinct and request another report be taken and wait for her complaint #. Mistakes happen, do you start a thread on a message board everytime Mickey D's screws up your order? As for the throat slashing, I never posted that it happened in Prospect Heights. Theres a fine line between Crown Heights and Prospect Heights and I hope you don't think the criminals are as familiar with the boundaries as the Real estate agents are.

If it were your mother or significant other being threatened, I don't think you'd be this dismissive.
  • What? We want the police officers to actually care about something more than their pension?

    Good luck.

You're a wack DJ... there. I questioned you. Stop bashing individuals for the faults of the larger society and a disfunctional bureacracy. Bashing cops is like bashing teachers... they didnt create the situation, but for the most part they are doing the best to deal with it.

I find you're posturing self-serving and full of identity self-consciousness.
    Slow Down.

    details?
  • I was inquiring about who took the report because eventhough many of you think the cops are lazy or dismissive the civilians are even less interested in your problems. Some civilians are fantastic but most don't care about anything but getting their check every two weeks.

Unfortunately mistakes do happen from time to time. I recommend you return to the precinct and speak to the officer who took your complaint. Find out from her if there was some type of problem with the report or an explanation as to why it is missing from the system.

Oh PLEASE! Who doesn't work within the confines of dysfunctional bureacracy?

You should speak to this person's superior and tell them what happened. Your complaint is just as valid as any other complaint that comes it, no matter how minor or how serious it may be.

  • Oh PLEASE! Who doesn't work within the confines of dysfunctional bureacracy?
I may be crazy, but there is a difference between working for city government and private industry. Just sayin.

Wow. Thanks, I'm sorry if my djing, or shall I be frank, my iPodding skills don't move you. BUT, my paying job is as a teacher and I am held up to rather high standards. Mute point you just made, eh?
  • Point being... it's ridiculous and arrogant to judge the labor of other folks whose work you can't observe. Let folks do their jobs. Don't discourage them from posting information that other people value, and acknowledge the difficulty of their work.
  • LeeHo wrote: Mute point you just made, eh?
    Eh moot point, right?

And to go back, I think crime on St Marks "far from here" does affect us since the 77th's range is from Flatbush to Utica, unless I'm mistaken.

Brooklynleather, you should file a complaint.

right - Tish. sorry about that.

I think it's important to differentiate between complaining about individuals and complaining about the system. The original poster stated that the precinct appears to have lost the complaint. This is a valid concern and needs to be brought to light.

I didn't see it as an attack on any individual and as KWOAC pointed out, the internal system at the 77th has multiple layers with plenty of places that things can slip through the cracks. I think it was ParadeRest who has pointed out on another thread that even the most basic of office equipment is lacking at the 77th, in addition to manpower.

So the issue here is with the larger system, not with individuals. The people at the 77th may be busting their humps and doing a great job considering what they are dealing with but that doesn't mean people shouldn't make noise about the lack of manpower, lost complaints, etc.

It's important for people to speak up with any issues they have and also to not get attacked for doing so. The community can help the precinct to show the larger powers that be that there is a need for more resources but this won't happen if people stay silent.

And BTW, I really appreciate KWOAC and ParadeRest for participating in these forums. I think everyone has the same goal in mind and it's important to know what's going on from both sides. Good communication about what both sides need will go a long way towards improving the neighborhood.

You are mistaken. The eastern boundary is Ralph Ave. not Utica Ave.
  • Well that's even farther then. The 77th covers a lot of ground.

    same here.
