AFFORDABLE haircuts for women?
I've been going to Medusa salon, and every time I go, I'm out like 80 bucks. I have fine, thin straight hair and like to get a trim every six weeks or so. It takes 15 minutes to do...just a little shaping and some long layers. I hate having to pay so much money for a simple haircut!!
I tried Supercuts once last year, and my hair was mangled by a young girl who obviously hadn't had any training in how to cut hair. Won't do that again.
Isn't there a happy medium?
Maybe I'll just let it grow forever and give up haircuts altogether. :-(

Pomona...Lori's cuts are around $55. Not cheap cheap, but she's good

Subject: cheap cuts
I feel ya, girl.
I have the same hair. Fine and flat, bleh. All I want is someone who cuts bangs really well and can manage to trim the bottom straight. Why is that so hard to find for under $35? I mean, it only takes 10 minutes or less to cut my hair!
 oh well... -
That seems like such a simple request.
Are you familiar with Marios on 5th ave and 6th street. Nothing fancy but ask for Evelyn. I have curly hard to cut hair and she does a great job. I have watched her cut the kind of hair you girls have and she does it well. The price has gone up recently.. I pay $20. Long hair might be $5 more but we are certainly not talking your basic $80 trim price.
Disclaimer.. I have no connection with this salon other than Evelyn has been cutting my hair for near a decade. -
I was reading the CH forum earlier and apparently you can get a 15. haircut on every corner...

These places are important to our people, we love to look good and get our hair done for $10 or $15 dollars by the dominicans vs. that high end salon you flock to park slope too.

I go to Michael's on 7th Avenue during their student cut days, and there is a woman named Alisa who has cut my hair twice and for whom I'm thinking of starting a fan club - she is amazing, does just what I want, and my hair turns out gorgeous. And it's $15.
-
Thanks for all the tips, people. No more will I be shelling out nearly a day's wages on a simple trim!

That quote is from a post about shops and businesses that cater to African-Americans in Crown Heights. Perhaps I misunderstood the original poster's meaning, but my impression was that the affordable salons the original poster mentions specialize in styles specific to african-american culture, such as braiding, etc. They might be willing to do my hair too, but I'm not sure that I am the customer that their services are aimed at.
Maybe I'm wrong on this, but I feel that it could be awkward for them and for me if I were to walk into a place that specializes in braiding and other styles specifically for African American ladies. -

Well, it depends who you are. The ones I have approached often will not do white hair, which is fair enough because many of the high end chi chi salons around here claim they don't know how or won't do black hair. They're a great resource, I wish something similiar existed that wasn't supercuts.

look on craigslist for student hair stylists, they're always cheap and flexible.

Too scary without getting a referral. A bad haircut takes a long, long time to grow out -

Veets, I don't know of it but it sounds like exactly what I'm looking for. You wouldn't happen to know their number, would you?

never mind, found it:
Mario's Hairstyling Salon
371 5th Ave
Brooklyn, NY 11215

I also reccomend Lori at Pamona. $55. It's still a lot, but at least it's not $80. It's worth it.

I never know what to tell the stylist when she asks me what I want. I always end up just saying "a trim" or something.
What I really want is to find a hairstylist who has a good "eye" and knows how to shape hair to flatter your face. And who has a good sense of style.
That is hard to find. -
cythren wrote: What I really want is to find a hairstylist who has a good "eye" and knows how to shape hair to flatter your face. And who has a good sense of style.
I have always been a big fan of Dana at Hair Concern. She does have a great eye for what suits you but is always willing to try to do what the customer wants as well.
Dana does a fantastic job and one of the tag lines of their shop is something like "hair cutters who listen" and they do! She always listens to what you want and if you ask for ideas or suggestions she will give them. But in the end she will cut it the way you want.
Another thing I love about their shop is that they have a policy that if you aren't happy come back within a week and they'll trim/cut again to fix it. That way you can have them cut it and if you aren't quite sure if you want more cut you can wait a few days and see how it goes. If you want it trimmed a bit more they will do it for free within a week of your first cut.
The shop is on 7th Avenue (between 2nd & 3rd Streets). It is upstairs from the newsstand and the entrance is just to the left of the newsstand when facing the building. Their number is 718-499-9400.
Last time I was there a cut was about $40. -
I just passed by Mario's. A bit too barber-shoppy for me. Only old men in there.
I went to Hair Concern and got Dana's hours and number. They told me a cut would be $38. I'm going to give her a shot. Thanks, Hollyhock! -
Mario owned this place for years and years.. he still works there but technically the business was sold to a lady haircutter named Eve. I don't know when you passed by but mario is the only"barber" there.. most of the time 2 or 3 women work the chairs and most of the clientel they have are women..
Whatever... good luck in pursuit of a reat haircut where ever ya go. -
Thanks. I walked by today around noon. Three old men sitting in the back chairs. No customers. No women anywhere.
Ah, well.
$38 works for me -
mmm. now I am wondering what is up with that?
Perhaps the Lady haircutters on strike? -
It just made me afraid I'd come out with a buzz cut, a fade or a mushroom top or something.
My hair takes a long, long time to grow back -

Just what are her hours these days, Flexichick? She was out on maternity leave for a bit so I kind of lost touch.
Thanks! -
Wed, Fri and Sat. Not sure what times, but I know she had an opening tomorrow at 10, so I guess she starts early-ish.

OK, here's the story of my little haircut adventure...
I went to Eve at Mario's (the place is now Eve's). She was super nice. The haircut cost me $25., so it was reasonably priced.
Problem was, I have super, super fine, thin straight hair. I went in with shoulder-length hair with some long layers in it. Came out with it 2" shorter in back, and - yikes - 4" shorter in front - it was cut all choppy in layers, which would probably work really well on someone with thick hair or curly/wavy hair. It was a sort of Jennifer Aniston cut, only, I have about 1/4 the amount of hair of J.A. and my hair just won't DO that style.
It looked all raggedy and kind of like a bi-level mullet like thing with a longer flappy part in back.
Sooooo
Today I went to Lori at Pomona and she fixed it. Now I have a chin-length bob cut with a razor, with some soft layering around the edges. It's a really nice cut and it works well with my hair type. She did a great salvage job.
I set out to get a mild trim on my shoulder length hair. Two haircuts and $95. dollars later (tips included), I have a cute chin-length bob.
So now I feel the need to go out and buy some cute mod skirts to match my new hairdo.
I'm planning to go to Lori at Pomona exclusively from now on. She does good work, has a great style sense, and has reasonable prices. My cut was $55. -
Lori does do a good job cutting. I like her.
I was not happy with the color she did for me, the first and only time I used her for color.
I was specific in wanting very natural looking low- and high-lights.
The lowlights were much too golden/obvious, and have created a visible growth line, which I very clearly told her I did not want.
To her credit, she offered to put a toner on it, to even it out....I ended up not taking her up on it, because i was afraid that toning it down would take all of the highlights out, and because she was going on vacation and I just didn't have time to get it set up before she left.
I would go back to her for cuts (and perhaps color, but not sure on that right now), as I have always been happy with her cuts...it's just that $38 is even better than $55 IF the cut comes out good.
Cynthren, that's my fear! I have fine hair too and a bad cut would take forever for me to get back to normal. I'm glad Lori managed to salvage it for you. -
cythren... Too bad you had a bad experience at Marios... NO EVE...YES EVELYN... for anyone who wants to try this place.
-
I just came back from getting a cut with Dana at Hair Concern. It's fabulous and she was super nice. Only $38, and you can go back within a week if you want it re-done, plus she trims bangs for free as a walk-in whenever you want.
Woohoo!
Thanks, Hollyhock, for the suggestion.

Is this true? Do Asian women only get their hair cut by Asian women? -

I gave my opinion, which was when I approached about five of such mentioned hair salons (I was looking to get extensions and didn't want to spend $500), I was turned away. Same thing happened when I went to a salon in Chinatown. They're specialty places, and my hair doesn't fall under their specialty. Just stating my own experience. No need to get snippy. -

yay! I'm glad you liked Dana. I started going to her years ago when I first moved to Park Slope on the suggestion of a friend and have always been pleased with the results. I got out of touch during her maternity leave but I'll have to see if I can get back there again now that she's back.
Woohoo!

Try Lelha @ Delilah Salon on 4th Ave between president and union. Open 7 days a week w/ flex schedule. Lelha is the owner and she's fantastic! The salon is smaller, but has a very boutique feel to it. Busy Thursday-Sunday, but chill earlier in the week. They also do waxing and nails.
Cuts start at $30(was $35 for my long hair)
Color is reasonably prices as well. Check her reviews out on City Search.
