Have you bought fish in C town on 9th street?
We eat fish at least 2 times a week and when I don't order from Fresh irect that is my source. Because the volume sold is high the fish is more likely to be fresh. You can see through the day that the fish guy is cleaning back there and putting more fish in the case.
I did use the 5th ave place years ago and the owners knew me.because I was a regular. One day I asked for some blue fish or something and they actually said.."this fish not for you this week."
Geez did that skeeve me out.
Translated that meant.. "We are willing to sell the fish to someone who wanders in here but not to a regular customer."
I stopped using them. -
CTown does have good fish.

I dont' like slammin' the local businesses, but i'm scared to go into Sea World. The sidewalk outside stinks like rotten fish. I myself would not buy fish there. I go to the fish stores on 7th Ave (not sure exactly where, but like 1st street maybe).

Agreed - I use C-Town or the store on 7th Ave between 4th and 3rd. C-Town is such an underrated market for produce and meats (and yes, I also do the Co-op and A&S and Great Western).

Some rules of thumb when looking for fresh fish. Make sure the eyes are clear, the flesh is firm & shiny and the odor nil. I always go to Blue Moon at GAP Farmer's Market every Saturday. The fish is pretty cheap and really good. Saying that, I have never been to C-Town, so what they hay! Check it out.

If you're looking at fillets then make sure it's not blanketed by ice. Underneath is fine (with paper or cloth between the fillet and ice) but on top and all that fresh water leaches the flavor out. Personally, when Blue Moon isn't around during off season I like the corner store on 3rd and 7th Ave.

You should never buy from a place that smells like rotten fish.
