I think the quality of DD's coffee varies regionally -- I swear, they brew it stronger the further north you go.

I'm anti-Starbucks. So glad I'm not into coffee, because I'd be challenged not to go in there
  • Purity Diner on 7th and 7th is much better than Grecian. They're too greasy/dirty. Course if you're drunk who cares. I'm surprised I'm alive from the dives I used to eat way back when ;)

My husband much prefers DD coffee to Starbucks. He even buys it to make at home.

Got this in an email the other day. Blog about Brooklyn Diners. Haven't really looked at it yet.

  • late night falafel would be ideal
  • so long as i can get entenmann's and ben & jerry's 24/7, then that pretty much covers it.

Holy shit Idlewild, that was the place I was going to recommend. It's just about the only place open when I'm riding by at 1am. I've never been inside, however. It looks greasy.
Another option is DunkinDonuts at... I believe it's 6th ave, and Atlantic, I think. If you go after Midnight, you can get 4 donuts and 2 cappuccinos for $4.

I did say "...and don't give a shit about what's on your plate".
  • Good point. I don't think I will stop in there any time soon, but you never know when the late night munchies hit! Even so, I would rather take a ride to white castle on Fort Hamilton.

In all fairness to the greasy spoon, aka Chewy Lou's, they do make great donuts. Especially when they're right out of the fryer and just iced. As far as White Castle goes those sliders are deadlier than any thing Chewy's can whip up. Although I do like their clam strips. I'd go down to Popey's on Empire and Flatbush when I drove a cab. Sometimes the Wendy's or McD's nearby. Oh hell we should just be honest and admit that most places use the rats they catch and kill as fillers and re-use the food other people don't eat. Gray's Papaya should take over the newstand/deli at the Q/7th Ave station. I'd give them 50% of their biz alone.

there's a White Castle at Atlantic and Grand! so worth the trip.

last time i ate white castle i had indigestions for three months
  • What aboot the tique? Bageltique, that is. Drunkeness perfectly complements the food and ambience.

Bit worried by the whole "closed for renovations" thing, however. Heard rumours of sushi being added to the menu. Tique, don't fail me now!

Maybe she wasn't drunk enough. :P

I went to the Dunkin Donuts again, tonight.. I was so wrong in my previous post. It's the one on 5th ave and 9th st. Across the street from the Smiths Tavern and Eckerd.

I had some terrific pineapple rice at Mango, but other than that, I do not feel compelled to visit there again.

Does anyone ever go to Mr. Chows (is that what it's called?) That place always looks empty. I went there once, and the staff was so bored they just stared at us the whole time.
  • I just don't get the New York fascination with Dunkin Donuts. I grew up in Florida and my associations with Dunkin Donuts put it on par with gas station nachos. THe fact that they're combined with Baskin Robbins in a single store is also a huge warning flag.... makes me think of the Taco Bell/Pizza Hut mashups in gas stations.

Now Krispy Kreme; there's a good donut.

the whole "mash-ups" thing happened a few years ago; same company owns several stores so they merge to have both. personally, i think BR makes the best choc. chip mint of all other brands (and i have tried them all).

yes, krispy kreme rocks. even though my kk stock crashed and is worth like 4 cents. but there's nothing like that hot donut experience. (and yes, dunkin donuts pretty much sucks, i think.)
  • DD has the best coffee after NYC bodega coffee. If I'm outside the city I always opt for DD. And I second the Baskin Robbins chocolate chip shout out (although I like the regular better than the mint). The shaved flakes of chocolate just makes every bite a bit of heaven

actually, i'm one of the few that likes starbuck's coffee (and not afraid to admit it).

and those chocolate shavings... in the cc mint the chocolate has mint flavoring.
  • baskin robbins has the BEST chocolate peanut butter ice cream. the peanut butter is firm and salty, the chocolate isn't too sweet (haagen daaz' version is too sweet, for instance). I am a total degenerate sex ho for a cone of that stuff.
  • i think baskin robbins often gets a bad rap because they're a giant chain and not all fancy-fancy like haagen dacz. (sp?)

uncle louie's in a chain, albeit local (i think) and their ice cream rocks. (blackberry is a fave).

this is why i cannot fit into my clothes: ice cream every day for weeks. i've been packing away those ben and jerry's "everything but the" daily.

Uncle Louie G's chocolate peanut butter ice cream is THE best. Not sweet, nice and salty. I haven't tried BR's choc/PB, but I'm addicted to Louie's. My only beef is that the damn high schoolers that staff the Union St store don't know how to pack a pint of ice cream for shit. Every time I get home the damn pint is full of air. Arrrrrrrgh!
  • My beef with Louie G's is his big, honkin' yellow Hummer that says "ICES" on it.

I had to laugh once when I went to the one on PPSW (near the lake in the park). I begged the pizzeria next door to let me use the bathroom, came outside and found my vegan friend eating a cone from Louie's and saying "it's sooooooooooooo creamy". I said "which side did you order from?" and she said "the left side". Um, it's creamy because you ordered ice cream, not an ice, silly vegan.

Now, I would not be laughing if she freaked out because I know that people who make that choice do so for reasons that are important to them, but she was so funny about it in a "oops" kind of way. And she was stoned.
