I think the outdoor market at Grand Army Plaza has really nice plants, but I'm not sure how many days they're there.

I was actually at Tarzanian yesterday looking at plants and was really disappointed by the selection. I feel like there must be other places, right?

Not quite in PS but only 5 minutes by car..... David Shannon Florist & Nursery (3380 Ft. Hamilton Parkway, 11218) opposite Greenwood Cemetery they have a huge selection of plants at fairly reasonable prices.

I like Rootstock...their flower selection is very nice and they seem to have different things every week.

Dig on Atlantic (and Bond?) is nice, too, but it's a small hike from P.Slope.

The vegetable market on 7th Ave between 11th and 12th always has a nice selection of garden plants. Good quality and a nice selection. and not too pricy! Nice people also.

BBG, like Carn said -- They have plants all the time at the gift store there but next week there's the megafabulous HUGE sale - the basics for cheap, shrubs, exotics, everything. It's worth joining the garden just to attend the member preview day Tuesday, although it's a bit like one of those wedding dress sales at Filene's Basement...but surrounded by cherry blossoms in full bloom.

Leopoldi's, the hardware store on Fifth Ave near 6th St has plants -- small selection of very basic stuff.

Shannon's is fantastic - I've been out there - they are amazing. I was doing a little mental quiz - what DON'T they have? - and I couldn't find anything. (Well, I wasn't looking for contraband.)

if you're thinking of gowanus nursery http://www.gowanusnursery.com/, it's moved to summit btwn van brunt and columbia (used to be on 3rd, close to the canal).

i was window shopping there sunday, and it looked nice.

I can vouch for Shannon's and Gowanus Nursery as well. I've gotten great plants from both. Shannon's will also stock certain things if you ask. Anyone been to Gowanus' new space? Is it bigger? Smaller?

Lowes is just fine for plants. They keep them well watered, have frequent shipments and high turn over. My favorite nursery is the one on caton Ave about 2 blocks down from Coney Island Ave. The owner knows more about plants than anyone I have ever met. The quality is exceptional and the prices are just a little more than other places. Shannon is fine as well.

second for lowe's.
last year a truly nice woman ran the department during daytime.
she watered and took good care of those plants, and had some good ideas for those plants that are city-tough - can put up with bad soil, high heat, dog piss and more.

Yep, if they have what you're looking for, Lowe's is good. I got an Anthurium and a Calathea there that have really taken off. The three Pieris I got are also doing well.

The trick with Lowes is finding out what days of the week the plant order comes in and checking it out by the next day and as the season goes on what is available in annuals does change.

YES! I went there yesterday and they had nothing. People cleaned it out this weekend. So I know they don't stock on Mondays!

I've been to Gowanus' new space. It's bigger, and much easier to browse, and they had a really nice selection of stuff. I dropped $200 on some gorgeous perennials and small trees I've never seen for sale locally before. Some of the plants were missing labels and such -- probably growing pains, I'm sure they'll get to it eventually -- but the folks were very nice and the plants were lovely and well tended. And all the plants seemed to have been carefully selected for likelihood of survival in Brooklyn, which is something you can't say about most plant vendors.

A word of warning: It's really hard to figure out how to park on their block. The blocks keep changing direction w/o warning and we ended up driving in circles. Worth it, though.

Lowe's is only good if you get there when the orders are coming in (as veets said), but if you do, you can get some good deals on mature perennials.
(Years ago, the same was true of HD. But they seem to have given up on the plant section (and on everything else). Truly an island of lost souls, populated by dead-eyed zombies.)

Oh, and Zuzu's Petals, in their new location on 5th Ave between 5th & 6th, has perennials. They're good folks.

Sounds good. I think I may go there this weekend instead of Shannon's. The good thing about not having a car is that it limits me to only buying as much as I can carry on the bus

I'm not sure if they're still there with the construction, but last year we got some nice plants for great prices at the outdoor plant shop within the triangle up by 1 Hansen Place. Kinda between Flatbush and Ashland, if I recall

Agreed. Great place in a pinch and a pretty good selection since they spread across three storefronts. Another place no one mentioned is Eagle Provisions on 5th & 19th. We found a bunch of herbs there that we didn't find elsewhere.

Not in the Slope, but as long as we're including Red Hook... a new place called Liberty Sunset Garden Center will be opening up soon. I've also heard that Chelsea Garden Center will be opening up a block or so from Fairway. I can't wait! Meanwhile, I'm girding my loins and sharpening my elbows for the madhouse that is the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Members' Preview Sale.

Eagle can be terrific for plants if you hit it right.. healthy plants and sometimes very unusual.

agreed veets, double yes to eagle provisions on plants, good selections, aphid free annuals, they seem to have a reliable supply of flanders and oriental poppies too

mostly i go there for their smoked pork chops, smoked eel, and home made pierogies, but you have to fight some fierce +5 polish ladies

Ah Eagle/// Now the chopped liver can be terrific BUT you must taste it before you leave the store. I do this alllll the time.. I bring it to the counter, pay for it and before I leave I taste and if it is sour I demand to see a manager.. And of course they take it back and I go with them to the back and they take it off the shelves. Same is true about their potatoe salad (dill)... either a miracle of flavors or rancid.

Keilbasa is this place is terrific...no need to pre taste that one.

Last week I bought a perrenial for $40...It was so glorious it couldnt be left in the store... no tag (prob had fallen out of the pot) but I did some research and it was a rare rhodedendrum (sp?) that would have cost more if ordered fromall those designer nurseries.

By now you all mus realize I have a major garden but won't further identifiy where... but it is on street side and I am careful with what goes in and how this display looks so I stalk neighborhood neurseries for plants and take trips upstate as wellto nurseries.

Subject: Chelsea Garden Center

The Chelsea Garden Center has just opened on Van Brunt, a block from Fairway! W00t!

They were still stocking things when I got there on Saturday; half their generous space was empty. They seemed to have a nice selection of annuals, but I have eyes only for perennials, so I made a beeline for those. Beautiful, beautiful mature birches of different varieties, cherries, dogwoods, etc, and a huge Harry Lauder's Walking Stick that I lusted after but don't have enough sun for. Definitely a place to go when you're looking to drop some serious cash on some serious specimens. They had the usual suspects too -- small conifers, azaleas, astilebe, etc, etc.

Hold on to your credit card, veets! In a place like this, mine has a way of bounding out of my hand and off to the cash register before I can stop it.
