Did this board become staid and dull? — Brooklynian

Did this board become staid and dull?

Am I the only one who thinks this board has gotten kind of dull? What happened? It now feels like eavesdropping on a party line where most people seem to know each other. Is Park Slope THAT small now?

  • Things do seem slow right now, but I think there is natural rhythm to it and no doubt it will pick up again
  • Yawn...yeah...what happened to the good ol' days when we chatting about people having sex on roofs?
  • I haven't been a member long enough to talk about the good ole days but I know from membership in other forums that things wax and wane and it seems like the board is slow right now. That doesn't mean dead or boring.. just slow.. Suggestion.. Get personal a little bit.. Talk about your Sunday as a resident in PS in a personal way and see what people have as responses. These forums suceed in the long run based on real sharing. Hey of course some of us are looking for a girlfriend or a boyfriend or both... I am 57 year old hot WJ looking for hot MALE below the age of 30... no preference on race, ethnicity and such. I need a hetero Male that I can persuade!! ok I am kidding.. but wanted to get someone's attention!!
  • I too haven't been a member on here long, just moved back to NYC after living in Hoboken for 4 years - and let me say, I'm disappointed in this board! Where are all the late 20's to mid 30 year olds?! Where are the people who go out and have fun (ok yes maybe they're still out having fun), but in Hoboken, we had a fun life on and off line. And no, you bitter people, do not tell me to go move back there or make some snarky comment - I know you're out there ;-)
I'm used to people watching, walking down the street, outdoor seating at restaurants and cafes - someone give me a clue!

  • We go out, we have fun, you're just not invited.

  • im in my 20's

    but im new here
  • The weather's finally nice and you're wondering why the boards are a little slower? We're not THAT big of a buncha pasty, never-seen-the-light-of-day, chained-to-the-keyboard nerds.
  • This is a prefect time for Carl the Druid to chime in.
  • Been here almost a year and yes it was much more interesting. Perhaps there are just too many categories now.
  • Come to a happy hour! We had like 20 ppl the other week. And there are undocumented extra-curricular activities going on all the time...

I agree that the board got way too subdivided into separate boards. I waste a lot of time on the internet, including here, and even I don't have time to click on every board. Other things that I think tend to stifle conversation are threads being merged, moved, split, and closed (because there's a similar thread). I think you tend to get livelier conversations when threads are allowed to evolve naturally. Whoever is managing this stuff is super, super organized, and I think that is great in most contexts -- I bet your apartment looks amazing -- but it's a little overdone here. JMO.

Speaking of which, game night at BB possibly followed by Moonie's soon? I wanna check out the renovation...
  • Yea baby. You and your Drunken Tiger Style pong-fu are going down.
  • Also, I've been working all weekend. I'll be having a few drinks somewhere tonight if anyone wants to join me.

One thing you can do to help with that issue is let a mod know if you see something on one board that could also go in another category. We can cross-post threads so that they appear in more than one place. (Cross-posting is better than making another thread in a different board because that way all response posts show up in both places.) That way, if something applies to, say, PS and also general fitness issues, you would see it even if you only checked one of those boards.
  • Hmmm the last few posts kind of illustrate my point. The board used to have lively debates (and negative ones) and whenever you logged in, you always saw at least 2-3 people were also logged in. Now it just seems like a small club. Which is fine for those who want to join and hang out together. It appears to have changed it's focus (I think) from a neighborhood board (where strangers might argee or clash) to a chat room or something. Maybe when the guest postings got out of control and were closed down, that changed the board to something much more insular. Or maybe as Rose suggested it got too organized (totally applaud the effort but it lost something organic in the process).
  • Or maybe it has something to do with Park Slope becoming more sterile in general?

It seems to me there are more pasty-faced khaki-wearing peeps moving in from Manhattan, bringing their inner borough neuroses along with them. Everybody is so obsessed with where they live, what they wear, where they shop. It's like they are following a rigid script.

I realized this when I saw an old-school rocker type in his late Forties emerge from the F-station wearing a black leather jacket and a huge white fur hat (this was in Jan.) and chunky silver jewellery. He looked so old-school, punk NY, following his own path.

People only seem interested in: 'is this store good? / 'am I doing the right thing'? Personal comfort type questions, no discussions about the more interesting stuff in life - because maybe they wouldn't know what that was if it bit them on the nose.
  • well, if you want to liven up the board, I'd suggest starting a thread more interesting than 'why this board sucks lately'.

Seriously - have YOU contributed? I'm sure you have opinions - why not share them? The people who seem like they're in a club are "known" personalities only because they come on and post.

I'm not saying anything, I'm just sayin ;-)

if not too late, where you thinkin'? I'm going to work tomorrow (!!! - for those who know me) and I can't stay out too late. but I like seeing people.

if you think the board is dull and stale - just come hang out with folks. we know how to enjoy ourselves. sometimes life just isn't super exciting so the posts don't reflect super excitingness. but shit, the patio at soda is open! why am i on the internets?!

Snarky Snarky  I freely admit I don't know many people here, but hope to learn more about the 'hood perhaps from those who know it better like yourselves!

Here's a starter: I went to Midwood HS, anyone else?

The fact that people are slightly more accountable for their statements is a part of it... but I think that the other part of it is just a lull in the dumb-shit arguments. Ebb and flow. Stick around; stupidity will eventually ensue.

O.K. so if you are going to subdivide into alot of categories, why not a category for those people who are friends and hang out together to check in to make their evening plans? A meet up board? Unless that is now the point of this board??? Because not everyone is interested in meeting up and hanging out (some people are older or have families or other evening commitmentsr). I am not saying anyone here on this board is boring, I am just saying the board itself has gotten boring and I am not sure why.
  • okay, I'm a little suspicious of this thread coming from a new user -- or perhaps you're a former guest poster or a longtime lurker getting bored being a spectator. Anyway, WTGirl, what was so interesting before that isn't here now?

People don't really know each other, especially on the PS board. PH has had well attended happy hours, so there's more real world goings on there but anyone can jump in, on or offline.

I'm with WhyFi on the ebb and flo thing -- it's finally NICE OUT for pete's sake!
  • karl tries to keep it interesting, with a bit of nuetral good alignment

oh, what was my point? forget it
  • Jillianna.. Yeah I graduated from Midwod too!! What year did you get released? I went across the street to Brooklyn College.
  • ok I thought about it again...
If anyone thinks that having gone to Midwood is interesting then this Board is doomed, as is the wrld, as is the universe, as is me... oh me
    goodness!!!!

I agree with this. Plenty of people are here to discuss/find out about stuff going on in the neighborhood but not necessarily looking for an offline social life. I mean, I think it is great that people are connecting in real life but not everyone sees that as the end goal of hanging out on this message board.

But I realize that it is silly for me to sit here and demand that others produce better content. And yes, it is nice out and I hope everyone is spending more time outside and less time hunched in front of the computer screen.
  • i'm confused. what was so all-fired interesting before that isn't happening now? rants about strollers? rants about people ranting about strollers? arguments about bank of america or designer onesies?

WTGirl, why don't you start a thread about whatever it is you are missing? This thread seems destined to produce more of the self-referential blather you dislike.

the point is, i blame rich children wearing gucci dog sweaters in bars.
