robbery on Skillman Street yesterday afternoon — Brooklynian

robbery on Skillman Street yesterday afternoon

hi, i just wanted to let you guys know that me and two other people were robbed at 265 skillman street last night. i'm giving the address because we were in the process of moving out, and whoever is moving in or around that area needs to be careful.

our door was left open-- not even five minutes-- while we were taking MANY heavy bags of trash out and two guys came in and started yelling about drug money that someone owed him. they said that people were going to die if they didn't get their money, and that they weren't leaving the apt-- and neither were we-- until the kid who owed him his money came home. all in all, we were kept in the apt for an hour while they threatened us. it was two guys... one was tall and athletic, black. he had his front six teeth gold platted and he had tattoos all over his arm. the other guy was slightly shorter-- maybe hispanic/black? with a tattooed word going down his arm.. he was kinda busted looking, with pot-marked skin, and really round and chunky. he was more violent and angry and the taller, skinny guy was trying to play good cop with us.

anyway, keep an eye out because they were seen walking around skillman later that afternoon and the police don't give a shit. keep each other safe.

  • kristen, i am SO SORRY to hear this. how terrifying. are you moving completely out of the neighborhood?
  • This is awfully scary. I'm so sorry this happened to you. What exactly did the police do/say when you reported them?

Why do you say that the police don't give a shit? Did you call 911 and make a complaint? Are you not satisfied with the way it was handled? What?
  • yeah, i am moving completely out of the neighborhood. it's actually my boyfriend's apartment. i live(d) in boerum hill/fort greene, and we are in the process of moving in together in park slope.

i talked to a very nice police officer later that day as i was getting a ticket for not having my dog in a carrier on the subway (arggh...), but we talked a long time about the robbery and if it was "worth" reporting it or not. the guys threatened to kill us, and it's one of those things where you don't know how you'd act til you are in the situation. we were in the apartment with the guys for an hour, and so scared that if for whatever reason we saw them on the streets now, they'd definitely recognize us. the police officer urged me to report it (i shouldn't have said they didn't give a shit- they were actually very worried about me), but also said he understood the reality of crime and how it's resolved in the city. he reassured me that this was no reason not to report it-- "it takes everyone to affect a change" is what he said-- but honestly i just want the whole thing to be over. the real reason i said the police officers didn't care was because the guys below us called the cops because they heard what was going on upstairs, and the guy said that they coudln't do anything for them if we weren't going to press charges.. the thing though is that it is technically there house too, since it is a shared house. i don't understand how them forcing their way into their house does not effect them in the eyes of the law.

anyway, just keep your eyes out! would hate for it to happen to anyone in the area. i really grew to like the neighborhood. the kids across the street were outside playing, and at one point i got out of the house and went over there with them (the whole story of the robbery is long and doesn't make sense). the kids were ages 3-10.. chanice and shania are 6 and they live on that street. those girls are awesome! i, of course, didn't tell them what was going on, but they kept me good and distracted while i was scared.. sweet girls. one of the little boys kept saying "ms kristen, what's wrong?!" he's three :)

I'm confused. The people down stairs called 911 and said that you were being robbed (which you say your were held for an hour)and they didn't respond to the call, is this what you are telling me? or Did they wait untill after to call the police? If it were after why the hell didn't you call yourself and why wouldn't you try to press charges? You can't make a statement like the police don't give a shit when you didn't even give them a chance.
  • I have to say that whenever I've called the police they've responded very quickly and have been very helpful. We once witnessed a terrible beating to a man involved in a drug deal gone sour and the police helped me track down the victim to urge him to go to the hospital. My neighbor's house was buglarized recently and the police came cruised the neighborhood looked for the burgler and waited while I secured the house safely.

I have to say I'm horrified by the idea of you being held hostage for an hour. God forbid if you're ever in that situation again, sceam, shout, make a ton of noise and immediately call the police. If the perpetrators think they can control the situation they will and you could be in danger. Good luck and take care of yourself.
