parking/car damage
i was wondering how people feel about the parking situation in fort greene/clinton hill. It can be a pain at times, but it is the price i pay for having a car in the city. My problem lies in the fact that people hit my car almost every day. On occasion people will bump my car and try to push it back so they can fit in a parking spot around me that they clearly don’t fit in and just a couple weeks ago my car got keyed as well.
Is anyone else with a car having this problem? Am i parking in bad spots or are people in brooklyn just careless when they park?

Wow. I've never had this problem. I mean, my bumper gets hit sometimes, but I take that with a grain of salt.
I'm sorry to hear that. -
Try to be conservative when you park so you provide space for others and the same is done for you. I have never had this problem and it shouldn't happen, but I hate to see spaces big enough for two occupied by one or twenty feet next to a hydrant.

I've sustained the normal scrapes, dings and dents on my bumpers, doors and hood- nothing too exciting. Same thing happened when I lived in Philly, so it's not some special breed of Kings County carelessness. I'm careful when I park, but I figure incidental damage is the price I pay for using public space to store my car. Some fucknut keyed both doors on the driver's side maybe six months ago- that didn't sit too well. Seriously- what was the point of that?
Slight derail- as someone who walks to work in Brooklyn Heights every day, I've noticed an increase in the number of car break-ins and tell-tale piles of auto glass on the sidewalk and in the gutter. I think this trend was mentioned in another thread on here. Grrr... -
Want to see something really kewl? Call Geiko and ask for insurance rates for Prospect heights (by zip code) then ask for rates in Fort Greene. I was shocked a couple years ago when I moved a matter of 12 blocks and my rates went up by about $300. As an aside, there is definitely a 'parking crunch' that didn't exist a few years ago. I can only imagine what it will be like when some of those multi-story condo units come 'on-line'.

Subject: signal light
I've gotten dings & such from parking in CH & ProsHts for the last five years, but a few weeks ago, I came out to see that someone had yanked one of my signal lights clear off my car. That was pretty outrageous. -
You can take the damge to your vehichle off your taxes. Just make sure you bump up the amount a bit as you only get a percentage off.

More street parking hijinks. Sometime between 9:30pm Thursday and 3 pm today someone rifled through my car- glovebox, center console and ashtray ripped open and stuff strewn throughout the passenger cabin. No windows broken, so either I forgot to lock the doors or the perp is proficient at the art of lock-popping. Also, it doesn't appear as though he or she took anything- apparently old Metallica cassettes, Delaware Memorial Bridge tokens and cigarette lighter chargers for obsolete cell phones don't fetch too many rocks (all this stuff was out of sight, too). I was parked on Waverly between Dekalb and Lafayette across from the playground- second time this has happened to me on this block.

just this morning I saw the tell tale glass on the curb on waverly bet wilhoughby and dekalb. I had my car violated on waverly bet myrtle & wilhoughby last year, though I admittedly left the trunk slightly open. Seems waverly is a hunting ground for petty thiefs at night.
-
in a two year period I had my car vandalised on the stretch of Waverly between willoughby and dekalb a total of 9 times. All the times they broke the vent glass of my Jeep Cherokee. Nothing was there for them to steal.
I called the police every time but the police could care less. That stretch is really bad.
Funnily its also the same stretch of street with all the illegal kerb cut markings. -
Parking issues and possible damage are a big reason why we do ZipCar, instead. Neither of us need to drive for work, though, so that makes a difference. For quick day trips and Ikea runs, we've had better luck with a carsharing service.

I saw this weekend that they have a zipcar garage @ Jay Street & Chapel. -
more glass on the curb @ Wilhoughby & Clinton, and also at Vanderbilt & Wilhoughby yesterday. It seems as though we're all dodging bullets everytime we park on the street overnight in CH/FG.

We lost a rear passenger window to a smash-in a couple of weeks ago. It was on Waverly as well but between Flushing & Park. We didn't lose anything as we don't store anything of value in the car. (Unless you consider a Voodoo Glow Skulls that I'm trying to get rid of valuable.)
The cops said they think it's the work of the same guy in the neighborhood. No sense reporting it to the insurance compay as it will just drive our rates up. -

who/where did you get the glass replaced? In the area? I suspect its only a matter of time before I have to use them too.

@ Guvna
I can't remember the name of the place. Our building's super referred us to a shop over by Metropolitan and Flushing, just over the border into Queens.
If you like my wife can check her receipts for the name of the place. They were pretty quick about it. $120 for the replacement. -

Subject: A & G Used Auto Parts
@ Guvna
The place we went to was called A & G Used Auto Parts. Our super referred us to Chico, who manages the place. It's way down Flushing at Metropolitan in Queens. Different price for cash versus credit.
There are also a couple of other glass shops in the area if you don't like their quote. -
We used the glass place on Atlantic Ave between classon and st. james (?). They were very nice and honest. There's also a whole bunch of places on third ave right where the gowanus expressway starts. They get used glass from a junk yard, they're really really cheap. I've used them several times for those little rear vent windows.
