Where to buy potted herbs (besides farmer's market)

you can buy seeds to start your own herbs at the co-op. also, there is a plant sale at the brooklyn botanical garden for the next 2 days.
-
The place across from one hanson sells potted herbs. I think it's called midtown florists, or something like that.

The BBG plant sale has the herby basics and lots of variety in mint and thyme and a few others - although not a lot of special herbs for Asian cooking - no shiso, rau ram, or Thai basil.
And at BBG, the flat paks are $2.
At the hardware store, you get one plant for $3.50.
The farmer's market at Union Sq has waaaaay better selection than GAP. What are you looking for? -
I'm looking for basil, dill, thyme, and cilantro. Cilantro is the one I haven't seen, and I wonder if that's because it's hard to grow. Anyone know? These are going to be indoors, in my kitchen window. Thanks for all the info.

I just started growing some cilantro in the window from BBG seed -- it sprouted in about 2 weeks and it's outgrowing the basil. Couldn't be easier.
I'm mistrustful of buying potted plants ever since a snapdragon from Keyfood introduced whiteflies to all my plants. -

yeah, quality(bugs/disease) is a real problem, but I've never had that issue with farmer's market or BBG.
cilantro is easy, but it bolts (gets leggy) and goes to hell fast.
one strategy is to replant seed periodically, so you have plants at all stages
I *have* seen cilantro plants all over the place - def at BBG and Union Sq Greenmarket. -
For cilantro, you might be able to buy the herb at any supermarket if it still has its roots and try plantinig it (I know that method works great with green onions)
-
union square farmers market, for sure.
-
hate to recommend them for anything, but the key food on flatbush has a bunch of potted herbs and plants on the sidewalk, including, as of this afternoon anyway, several trays worth of cilantro.
-
Just got back from the BBG plant sale, where I picked up basil, dill, thyme, and lavender for $3.50 each. Also two tomato plants for the fire escape.
-
the mint plant i got at the farmer's market is doing great -- except it was crawling with aphids. since i'm keeping it at home, i just picked them off with tweezers (i've been keeping an eye out for a new generation, but have only seen one or two since), but i'm glad i didn't introduce them to a garden.
be smarter than me -- look for bugs before buying the plant. -
Thanks for the tip, sweet tea. I was planning to get a mint plant at the FM on Saturday, so I'll definitely look closely.
-
Hey Lowes has a full selection of hearty potted herbs.. I bought dill, basil and cilantro this sunday..
-
Brooklyn Terminal Market is the cheapest place in town for plants of all sorts.
