Subject: Maria's Mexican Bistro

I loved Maria's when it opened, thought the food was terrific, but I ate there again about six months ago (after they expanded) and the food and service were terrible. Has anyone eaten there within the past six months?

Comments

  • I have eaten there in the last 6 months.. and the service was dreadful.. the food was ok.. never went back
    Just the opinion of one
  • I definitely loved this place before they expanded and had a mixed experience recently when I went back. The food was good - not great - and the service was mixed. We waited for our table at the bar for about 30 minutes, but took about 20 mins to get a drink since the bartender was overwhelmed preparing drinks for tables. I think they still have some work to do adjusting to their new bigger size. I hope they get there though.

For a always good mexican experience, Los Pollitos on 5th Ave at Douglass is always good, inexpensive and with good service. Not as unique, but always just right.
  • Yes Los Pollitos is not fancy but I have always enjoyed eating there.
  • Yay Pollitos! I love their little brunch menu. It's tasty food (but by no means fancy). Their drinks leave a bit to be desired, but at least you're not standind around like the shmucks across the street at Bogota. (For the record, I do like Bogota but will not stand on line for brunch.)
  • i think i'm one of the few people who's had a good meal there. at this point, i don't attempt any other mexican/latin restaurant except bogota and clemens

I am on the same page about not waiting in line for Brunch.. anywhere. I will put up with that nonesense on a Fri or Sat night if I want to eat out in the Slope but not for brunch. Brunch is one of those special treat, no-stress, leisurely urban spotlights in my life and I won't proceed it with a wait on a line.
  • This joint closed? Transformed into a different restaurant?
  • I went to Maria's about 3 months ago. It was pretty lame & I won't be going back.

I second brooklynpotter on Bogota. I don't even bother with anywhere else anymore. I Bogota is South American and not Mexican, but if I want Mexican I usually hit the Red Hook vendors or Tacos Matamoros in Sunset Park.
  • It's turned into a new place called "Mercado Social" or something similar. I think the menu is nearly the same but it's run by different people.
  • I heard that it actually turned back into Maria's. Weird.

Right - this is where I "heard" it:

  • Wow, now that's something you don't see happen all that often!
  • The best mexican in the Slope is Tacos Nuevo Mexico, by far......Try their soups and tamales.....really good.

Los Pollitos is ok if you want rotisserie chicken, but I wouldn't call it a Mexican restaurant. It always seemed to me that Los Pollitos is more of a cheapo pan Latin place......cause they also serve stuff like yuca and platanos.
  • ....let's just say that there were some goings on for a while which affected the ownership situation, caused the temporary name change, have now been resolved, and have led to the restaurant name returning to Maria's.

FWIW, I really don't think the back and forth is probably going to be good for business, as I can imagine the rest of the Slope has the same "WTF?" attitude I'm reading here. Too bad.
  • Gowanus Lounge has come out and said what I was trying to imply in the above post. Didn't really want to go there and talk about the whole marriage thing due to not knowing who knows what and not wanting to incriminate who told me about that, but it's in the open now...

How are YOU incriminating yourself? Are you one of the parties involved in the affair or marriage?

yeah....you caught me red-handed, althought I was just the one peering through the window. ;)
