The New York City Police Department is trying to make a law that:
* Any group of two (yes 2) or more cyclists or pedestrians traveling down a public street, who violate any traffic law, rule or regulation can be arrested for parading without a permit
* Every group of 20 or more cyclists must obtain a permit and approved route from the NYPD
* Every group of 35 of more pedestrians must obtain a permit and approved route from the NYPD
In a city that can't keep it's drivers under control, I don't think taking extreme measures against pedestrians and bike riders is really the answer.

Hmmmm. And when cars drive in packs of two or more? How about the packs of Ninja like motorcycles you see everyday? My guess is that cyclists will be required too have insurance sometime soon.

yes and no. the response to critical mass was originally due to a bike block at the RNC. however, the bike block was an isolated event not related to critical mass. -
Subject: oh
but it seems the police have been trying to squash the critical mass rides for a while now. -

yeah, two years now in nyc... since the RNC. -
I know I should care, but I'm so sick of bikers acting like dicks that I can't even work up the sympathy. On the Brooklyn Bridge, in midtown, and in PP, all I keep experiencing is bikers who can't deal with the fact that they can't always go 18 MPH in a dense crowded city. Sorry, I know that's not everyone.
I also think that packs of 20 or more on a street is a legitimate public traffic issue. Regarding the first item, groups of 2 sounds a little tough, but hey, try not to violate those traffic laws. -
The people in critical mass have watched The Matrix a few too many times....

Maybe if there is Graffiti on the bike, the fine will be even greater? You have to love Bloomberg and the suburbanites that move to city in support of him.

i could say the same thing about those who support the defacing of property are all suburbanites!!! they love that stuff so much cause they havent gotten any in their part of the burbs. so they come here and start to tag everything and destory a buildings look cause they want to piss their names all over the place.
man come out of the suburban closet already. -

Either that, or some of the people who worked on The Matrix have been in Critical Mass a few too many times... -

I don't know why you would have a problem with bikers on the Brooklyn Bridge unless you were walking in the bike lane. I have NEVER seen a biker on the pedestrian side of the line unless they were swerving to miss a pedestrian on the bike side of the line (which I see at least 5 times every time I bike across the bridge). And if you're going to suggest that bikers not break traffic laws in order to avoid this ridiculous prosecution, think about this: perhaps the next step is that pedestrians in groups of two or more who break traffic laws will be subject to the same laws. So don't cross against the light when you're with a friend... -

I have a problem because I don't believe cyclists should be riding their bikes on the bridge during rush hour. Too close for comfort and too many pedestrians and most of the bikers are going at a high rate of speed. Cyclists should have their own bikeway below the pedestrian way where the trolley lines used to run. -

..or if you are wearing all black (maybe some red) or if the cops already know your name... yeah. i once got "pulled over" by the cops on my bike and when i asked what the problem was they said, "what's that shirt supposed to mean?"
