Subject: Don't "secretly" promote your business here

There has been an ongoing issue on this message board, practically since day one, of "I love this local business" posts that sound suspiciously like advertisements.

Heights Coffee is the latest example. I'm sorry to single this business out, especially because I went once recently and I really liked it, and I plan to go back there, often, in the future. But some of the recent (and anonymous) posts have bordered on promotional.

(I'm not saying the Heights Coffee posts were not legitimate--they very well could be from local people, not affiliated with the coffee shop, who happen to like it a lot.)

Just a quick note to everyone: These message boards are not for secret self-promotion or "stealth promotion" of local businesses. If you are an owner, employee, or a close friend/business associate of the owner, then you MUST MAKE IT KNOWN that you are affiliated with the business.

Even if you are just a wage slave, and you happen to believe in the business you work for, it's probably a good idea to put that information on the table when you post.

Don't get me wrong - this board is all about promoting local businesses that you, as a customer, like. But this is a message board where people come to share credible information about businesses they like in Prospect Heights and beyond.

If you are a business owner, employee or close friend/business associate of the owner, you are NOT prohibited from posting here - you just have to be upfront about it. OK?

I very much enjoy Dailyheights website. I found that the posts are informative, the staff amiable and the design top notch. It is sure to be my #1 internet destination in the future and I am so glad that we finally have one in the neighborhood!
