WELCOME TO THE SANDBOX — Brooklynian

WELCOME TO THE SANDBOX

Right. Another board to which I once belonged tried this, and had a sizeable degree of success, so let's try this.

We all of us posting in here have a variety of different life experiences and perspectives. These perspectives do not always mesh well, and sometimes there is conflict surrounding a few certain issues. Which is to be expected; it happens anywhere humans gather.

However, when such conflicts flare up in discussions that have next to nothing to do with those conflicts, it's a problem.

So this is a thread just for those topics themselves; this is a thread for people who want to hash out those issues and scream at each other all they want.

Do you think that the increase in crime in Ft. Greene and Bed Stuy is because of teen gangs, and people who think otherwise are deluded? Talk about it in here.

Do you think that calling such kids "ghetto kids" is racist, and any person who would do so needs to be flogged? Tell them so in here.

Do you think that the newer residents to Bed-Stuy are bringing the neighborhood down, and you want to complain? Talk about it in here.

Do you think that Clinton Hill just started going to pot when the yuppies moved in? Talk about it in here.

Do you think that the people complaining that there's no Fresh Direct should get over themselves? Talk about it in here.

Do you think that the storefront churches are fronts for Moral Majority, LLC? Talk about it in here.

Basically, anything that gets angry discussion going, take it in here, and hash it all out in here. This way, maybe the rest of the threads can be left free for ACTUAL DAMN DISCUSSIONS.

Thank you.

  • I think discussions about damns are irrelevant in a fg/ch/bs message board!
  • MOD NOTE: please keep in mind as you dig around on this thread that it, too, is subject to the site's RULES, noteably:

-Be nice. If you can't be nice, go to a different website.
-"Nice" does not mean kittens and rainbows. More like, "general level of civil decorum." It's OK to argue and disagree, and in fact we encourage it, but don't stoop to personal attacks, name calling, shouting wild generalizations like "YOU'RE ALL A BUNCH OF GENTRIFYING YUPPIES", or other childish behavior.
-Try to pick one username and stick with it. If you start posting under different identities, do not be surprised when people get angry with you, or try to "out" you publicly as masquerading.
-"Moderators" are the people who make sure these boards stay fun and useful. They have their own set of rules too (see below).
-A moderator can delete your post for any reason, for any cause. [under consideration - DH]
-If your post gets deleted, it's not a First Amendment issue. It's probably an issue about you being a jerk.
(you can read the rest of the RULES here:http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3319)
  • Note to Mods: if I've overstepped some bounds, I apologize; should I delete this thread?

however: I have to ask what the "policing" policy is on the "childish behavior," because if I'm reading those rules right, some of the things I'm seeing in other threads in here shouldn't be happening. Do mods check in on the boards, or is it on the onus of people in the threads to report things?

(For the record, I probably wouldn't report anyone but a clear and obvious troll who came in here and spammed all the posts with screeds about fire-bombing us all or lengthy passages of MEIN KAMPF or things of that ilk.)

great question. we do try to keep an eye on all the boards, but frankly, there's a frickin' LOT to keep up with. and, of course, some things are judgement calls, and different mods may react differently.

if you notice something that you think should be dealt with, the best thing to do is PM a mod about it. that way you can be sure someone's seen it, and also, your opinion (as someone following a given thread closely) that a given post is over the line might help a mod who hasn't been reading closely understand what exactly is going on. does that make sense? we really are trying to make the board a nice place for all users, and user PMs are definitely taken seriously.

as for this thread...i'm tempted to say that it should go in the Lounge, but since it was started in direct response to issues on this board, my vote is to leave it here for a while and see how things develop. (but PM me if you feel differently, by all means!)

If only we still had flogging.
  • The people on this blog do not want to deal with issues of race because they believe it has no impact on their lives. They are mostly young individuals who have not matured enough to feel others pain or to understand that when someone is bombed in Iraq or the World Trade the pain and suffering is the exact same thing. I am not a so called American Indian, but their position and their suffering in this country was and is a act of terror and inhumanity. I am not a Jew but the work of Hitler and the "good" Germans who followed him is the same. I am not an Iraqi but the work of this country over in Iraq is the same as the other examples. Thank you and I await your unbiased mature responses. 8)
  • There is a VERY wide range of people posting on this board, and saying that the people "do not want to deal with issues of race", and are "mostly young individuals who have not matured," based on only a handful of posters, is itself an immature statement, and a bigoted one.

If you find everyone here to be immature, then why are you waiting for mature responses? Clearly, you must accept that not everyone is as immature as you feel, or else you would have abandoned this board. so if you understand that not everyone is as immature as you claim, then why are you targeting us all with the same brush?

...that was the mature version of what I really wanted to say. I did that just for you.
  • I guess you wanted to call me a bigot and immature, and you did that; but I did say "mostly" which should indicate that if it doesn't apply leave it alone and that would be the mature version. Queencallipygos, aren't the statements I mentioned more worthy of response and discussion than defending the youthful and immature after all those are temporary and sometimes harmless.

Nice generalization there. You should be proud. You are also one of the people on this board, so I guess you include yourself in this observation of yours.

While some may not want to deal with race every second on here, there are others who seem obsessed by race and want to see it in everything. A question about safety, for instance.

Yes, yes, yes. But develop your point and tie it into something relevant here.
  • Pardon me, June 16th is the 1st annual Bed Stuy clean sweep day so please get a broom and sweep a street or a sidewalk near your home, apartment or business. Spread the word and let's make Bed Stuy the cleanest place in New York. :o
