Shooting at St. John's and Nostrand
Subject: Shooting at St. John's and Nostrand
So I was coming home from work and there were a ton of people outside (and a lot of police cars around) just milling aboutI asked a couple of guys - who turned out to be plainclothes - and one said that there was a shooting and a guy was dead. What's with all the shootings recently? Does it seem to anyone else to be more rampant recently?
Is this a gang thing? Warm weather thing??

It is the shooting season, but so far at least this year, the number of homocides is down from last year.
In any case, I just observed a first on my block: plainclothes cops arresting the guys who always hang out in front of the building across the street (Park Place bet. NY and Nostrand). Perhaps it was related to the shooting. Or a sign of the times changing? -
I just returned from buying some groceries, right there. Saw the cops, it was around 8, still on the scene. Warmer weather really brings 'em out. Wait till Summer really starts. I'm so tired of this kind of violence.
-
I heard the shooting took place inside the basement of one of those buildings. I live a few doors down from there. I came home around 8 as well and saw all the cops and yellow tape. Yikes.
-
My husband and I witnessed the same cluster of people. One shopkeeper I spoke to said someone just found the body in the basement, and that the shooting didn't necessarily happen yesterday or immediately before the body was found. I was pleased with the swarm of attention it got from police.
-
Came home around 9:30, still crowds and many police officers.
-
The bullet ridden body laid lifeless for sometime following the shooting. The "stop snitchin" mentality apparently applies to calling for medical assistance too, since no one wanted to make the 911 call . So surprising!

I haven't seen any further information about this. Perhaps the basement was not used daily, and no one noticed for a bit because they didn't go down there? Also, "bullet ridden" would imply multiple shots? Is there more information available somewhere? -
"Stop Snitching"? How fuckin deeply stupid.
-
I remain unclear on how "stop snitchin" has been linked into this incident at this time. Reference?
-
There are multiple SRO apartments in that basement. The victim was shot multiple times in the torso. None of the residents would call the Police at the time of the incident. An anonymous tipster made a call to someone who eventually did call the Police.

This would be significantly more believable if you had some kind of source. Reference? -
Hi Frugalandhelp,
Folks who have been around here for a while can vouch that Kingwithoutacrown often has a bit of an inside scoop on stuff like this. He apparently has a pretty close connection with the NYPD (he's never said whether he's a cop himself, and nobody here *has* to reveal personal information about themselves, of course). I've been on this site for a long time and usually find his info to be credible, anyways. Hope that helps. -
OK, thanks King and apollonia, I will take your word on it. And concur with sje's opinion of "stop snitchen". Thanks for the info, BTW.
-
Any news on arrests? ParadeArrest and Kingwithoutacrown have good inside info...

Thank you for that. I will keep in mind

As of now theres been no arrest in this case. Most of the shootings including this one, appear to be drug related. If you don't believe me you can ask the guy on St.Marks who got his leg blasted off with a shotgun yesterday. But that probably didnt have anything to do with the 5 lbs of weed in his apartment.
-
Was it good weed?
-
LEGALIZE IT!
-
Ditto
-
As of yesterday there were still "remnants" of the shooting on St. Marks inside the hallway where it occurred. I guess the super is on vacation.
In regards to the St. John's shooting...The squad has identified the shooter regardless of the "stop snitching" campaign. It would save the city alot of money though if people with info would just come forward with it.
Be aware that there have been a number of shooting incidents in the old impact zone in the last month. The area has gotten better but it's still no great place. -
But it's got great weed!
-
I have honestly never seen a weed transaction. I some time wonder how people know who to buy stuff.
-
Actually, I am merely speculating on the quality of weed in CH as I have never purchased any around here....or anywhere in NY for that matter. I'm a bit spoiled coming from Northern California.

You're not very observant. -

Come over to my house. You can sit on the stoop and watch the endless parade of people coming off Nostrand, turning up the block, stopping to execute a transaction and going back down the block to Nostrand. The only way it could be plainer is if they hung a neon sign that said "Weed HERE" -

Man, no kidding. Like they couldn't be more blatant if they tried. It's incredibly OBVIOUS. -
I like the image of a neon sign reading "Weed HERE". It's like a Tex Avery cartoon with some Carl Stalling music. Actually, if the neighbors blasted that or Raymond Scott out their cars as opposed to hip hop, that'd be hot...if not hilarious.
-
Speaking of WEED HERE signs....
I have witnessed on Washington + Fulton as well as St Johns + Washington people hollaring in to the street about how they have the good stuff and are selling. No fear anywhere.
And PS, I support decriminalization, not legalization.
And PPS, Hollar Frugalandhelp

Yeah, there's a guy down the street from me who I'd long suspected was a dealer, given the constantly-changing cast of characters hanging out smoking on his stoop, and I got confirmation one day when I walked past right as he dropped a joint out of the top-floor window. The joint got stuck in a tree on the way down and the guy he was tossing it to had to shake the tree until it fell out. Very subtle.
Howdy, Stranger!
