Bed-Stuy Clean-Up Day
Recently our neighborhood was named the dirtiest in New York City by the NYC Sanitation Department. We, the residents of Bed-Stuy, refuse to allow our neighborhood to be defined by its trash, but the only way that we can showcase the beauty of our neighborhood is by making a clean Bed-Stuy a reality. We can start by taking part in neighborhood clean-up days. Anyone can join this effort. Let’s show the rest of New York that we care about our neighborhood!
Our first neighborhood-wide clean-up day is scheduled for this Saturday, June 16th 2007 .
WHEN: Saturday, June 16th,2007
8:45 am – 11:00 am
WHERE: Your block
WHAT TO BRING: Please bring one or two black plastic garbage bags and gloves to protect your hands.
WHAT TO DO: It’s easy! Just show up and help us keep our neighborhood clean! We will focus on removing sidewalk trash such as paper/plastic bags, cans, wrappers.
If you plan to join us, please post a note indicating your participation and the block you will be cleaning here: http://www.bedstuyblog.com/2007/06/11/bed-stuy-clean-up-update/
This will allow us to see what blocks are being covered on Saturday.

All are welcome and your brooms will be appreciated. I hope we get some visitors from our west to come over and support, Nostrand ave. needs some volunteers.

I just went to Home Depot and purchased on of those trash-picker-upper things. I saw the people in Parks and Recreation use them when they were picking up trash in the parks. I can't wait to get out and use it tomorrow to make my block clean.

Ah! Not even two hours ago my roomates and I were talking about the garbage problem around the area. I wish I would have known about this a few hours sooner. Hopefully more events like this will take place over the summer and the four of us will be hitting the streets with everyone else. I'll be interested to hear about the turn out (I didn't make it out of the house today until around 2). In the mean time I'll continue picking up trash here and there on my walk to the bus/train.

Don't worry, I'm sure we'll schedule another clean-up day soon. I cleaned up my whole block by myself and it only took me about an hour working at a leisurely pace. By 9:55 a.m. I had a trashbag full of trash and a block that looked much better (for the time being, at least). I believe that regular, coordinated clean-ups in Bed-Stuy will establish a social norm of cleanliness and will over time make our neighborhood look much more appealing to those of us who care.
